WHAT DOES "TEST OPTIONAL" REALLY MEAN?
Many students and families sadly take the word "optional" at face value when colleges say they are "test-optional." But here are the realities:
The SAT or ACT is only optional if a student wants to pay full price for college. Test scores still greatly affect merit-based scholarships.
In a 2020 NACAC survey of admissions officials at 221 colleges, more than 82% answered that they gave standardized test scores “considerable or moderate importance” in admissions decisions.
The issue of class placement still matters. And an ACT score of 22 or higher should waive two- and four-year college applicants out of most freshmen year remedial classes, the high school do-over classes that offer no college credit and reduce the likelihood of ever graduating.
More and more districts and states require at least one standardized test as a graduation requirement or to receive state-sponsored merit scholarships.
It's critical that they understand that a higher score still bolsters their application and their scholarship chances. Encourage your students to prepare for these tests. Jumping their score can be the best-paying job a high school student can have.
And then reach out to me to learn how I can help you to affordably increase your students' test scores and scholarships.
