In this program, Lawrence High School students are college students. The institutions are committed to our students’ successful completion of both a high school diploma and at least one semester of college credits.
Lawrence High School is recognized by the Massachusetts Boards of Higher Education and Elementary and Secondary Education as a designated Early College High School.
“Early college programs are crucial for exposing students to the opportunities higher education can create and with these designations, more students will be able to earn college credits at no cost,” - Governor Charlie Baker
Participation in the Northern Essex Early College Program is open to Lawrence High School students. The Early College team, guidance, and staff work together to evaluate student records to determine prospective student eligibility.
Students are exposed to Early College in the 9th grade during Pathway’s exploration week. Students who select Early College as their first choice that week can take the First-Year Seminar (FYS) in 10th grade. This course is taught by a NECC professor on the Lawrence High campus. This one semester-long course is an entry point into the program earning students who receive a C (75% or higher) 3 college credits.
All LHS 10th-grade students who are not in the FYS class will take the Unit 1 Pre-AP ELA test (Performance Task) that will be used to determine college readiness. Eligible students will receive a notification with the next steps about joining Early College. Students begin their Early College coursework in 11th grade.

All Early College students must fill out the NECC application as part of the enrollment process. There are three sections in which a parent's/guardian's signature is required. Two on the 2nd page and one on the third for the photo release.
The FERPA section of the NECC application is needed to give permission to your parent(s) or guardian to access your NECC registration, courses, college grades, and other information. Early College and school administrators can also communicate with your parents/guardians about your classes.
