To engage and retain students, LHS has also partnered with Merrimack College to design an accelerated early college program for AP track students.
Merrimack students take one college class per semester and take a support class taught by Abbott Lawrence Academy teachers to supplement Merrimack’s instruction. The Merrimack professors and ALA teachers meet once per week to plan and collaborate on course material. Students have the opportunity to graduate with up to 12 college credits.
Lawrence Public Schools contracted Jobs for the Future to conduct an Asset Map of the City of Lawrence and determined that, based on labor market data, the fastest growing fields in the Merrimack Valley Region are Healthcare, Technology, Financial Services, Advanced Manufacturing, and Education.
Should students choose to matriculate at Northern Essex Community College (NECC), they will earn up to 31 credits towards an Associate’s Degree in Health Care, Computer & Information Science (CIS), Engineering, or Education. The credits earned in this program are transferable to any public college or university in Massachusetts and can be used to fulfill the college’s general education foundation requirements.
