Classroom management begins with building strong, respectful relationships. I make it a priority to connect with each student individually from day one. By establishing trust and mutual respect, I create a safe and supportive environment where students feel seen, heard, and valued.
During the first two weeks of school, I dedicate time to explicitly teach and model the classroom rules and expectations. We discuss what respect, responsibility, and collaboration look like in action, and students are invited to help co-create norms so they feel ownership of our classroom culture.
To maintain consistency, I use a clear consequence system:
First consequence: A non-verbal or gentle verbal redirection to refocus behavior.
Second consequence: A private conversation or reflection time, along with a documented reminder.
Third consequence: A phone call home and/or restorative conversation, with possible additional intervention depending on the behavior.
In addition to structure, I believe in the power of positive reinforcement. I regularly acknowledge students for their effort, growth, kindness, and teamwork. Whether it’s through verbal praise, positive calls home, or small classroom incentives, I work to celebrate the good and keep motivation high.
This balanced approach of clear expectations, consistent consequences, and positive reinforcement helps create a learning space that is respectful, focused, and joyful.
