CIVIC ENGAGEMENT
We conducted volunteer service at the East Los Angeles Farmer’s Market where our GirlsBuild members, plus other students who were interested in volunteering, were able to host a booth and talk to the community about mental health. We also demonstrated how to plant seeds, we conducted mindfulness activities, and shared information about mental health. We also hosted monthly “Days of Service” on Saturdays where we established a volunteer program where we recruited volunteers to work on the school’s garden while also hosting a meditation or reflection activity related to a topic such as 9/11, Martin Luther King Jr Day, Black History Month, etc.
TEAM EVENTS
Our team participated in weekly meetings to plan for the following events:
We participated in monthly events at the East Los Angeles Farmer’s Market where we distributed planting kits, stickers, and ribbons with the purpose of mental health awareness. We spoke to community members about the importance of taking care of their mental health, just like they take care of a plant.
We also hosted monthly “Days of Service” (Garden Days) at our school’s garden where we invited our students, their parents, and students from the local elementary & high school.
We attended and reflected on GirlsBuild virtual events together, such as Julissa Arce's talk, the GirlsBuild Summit, and the End-Of-Year Girlsbuild Celebration.
We also conducted outreach when our parent center re-opened this year, to our students via lunch time activities, and to our teachers during teacher appreciation week.
