LAUSD Vision for Math Teaching and Learning
All LAUSD students will identify as mathematicians, see the beauty and joy in mathematics, and use their math knowledge and skills as tools for empowerment and liberation, in service of becoming change agents within their local or global community.

Providing Opportunities for all students
To build this identity, TK-12 Mathematics teachers and leaders in LAUSD will provide opportunities for all students to engage in mathematical discourse, sense making and meaningful problem solving to develop open, inquiring, and demanding minds with the confidence to approach novel situations with adaptability, insight, and creativity.
What is Illustrative Mathematics?
Illustrative Mathematics (IM) is a highly-rated, research-based, and standards-aligned curriculum. IM uses a problem-based approach, which will put our students and their thinking at the center of mathematics classrooms, just like our vision demands.
Why IM in LAUSD?
IM classrooms will look and feel different from a traditional math classroom, because students will build on what they already know about the world to co-constructing new math learning, with the teacher playing the role of a facilitator or guide. This change can be a big one for students, teachers, and families alike! But, we've learned a lot about what works in LAUSD, so you don't have to navigate this change alone.
