As members of the Advanced Studies Program, students are expected to demonstrate leadership, civic responsibility, and service to their communities.

All students are expected to complete:

• 25 verified community service hours each school year

• 100+ total service hours by the end of their senior year

Students are encouraged to complete hours consistently throughout high school rather than waiting until their senior year.

Approved Service Hours

Community service must:

• Benefit the community or a nonprofit organization.

• Be unpaid and completed outside of regular school responsibilities.

• Be supervised by:

  • an LAUSD employee, or

  • an adult serving in a professional supervisory role (for example, a supervisor at a homeless shelter, animal shelter, food bank, hospital, library, nonprofit organization, or community event).

Volunteer hours completed through athletic programs, community organizations, religious organizations, or nonprofit agencies may qualify if they meet these guidelines and are properly verified.

Verification

All volunteer hours must be submitted through the Advanced Studies Program service log.

Each submission must include:

• Date(s) of service

• Organization or event

• Description of volunteer duties

• Number of hours completed

• Name and contact information of the supervising adult

• Supervisor verification

Hours that cannot be verified may not be approved.

Recognition & Incentives

Students who demonstrate exceptional commitment to service will receive recognition within the Advanced Studies Program.

Senior Priority Recognition

At the beginning of senior year, students with the highest accumulated verified service hours will receive priority privileges, which may include:

• Early access to Prom ticket sales

• Preference when Teacher Assistant (TA) positions are assigned

• Additional recognition opportunities as determined by the program

Graduation Recognition

Seniors who complete 100+ verified community service hours prior to graduation will receive the Service Cord to wear during commencement ceremonies.

Student Responsibility

Students are responsible for:

• Finding appropriate volunteer opportunities.

• Recording and submitting hours promptly.

• Ensuring supervisor verification is completed.

• Meeting the annual expectation of 25 hours.

The Advanced Studies Program reserves the right to approve, deny, or request additional documentation for submitted volunteer hours.
