My name is Asalé Jones. I am 15 years old from Cleveland, Ohio. This year, I joined the Environmental Justice Semester at Laurel, and ended up completely transferring and becoming a student at Laurel School. This semester has taught me so much and I am so grateful for the opportunity to partake in this change making experience. I can say that the most important takeaway I have from this semester is that you are never to young to make change. If you hone in and focus on an issue you are passionate about, if you build a community of likeminded individuals, and if you perervere through the struggles and adversity that may come along the way, then you can accomplish anything you put your mind to!

The Environmental Justice Semester (EJS) at Laurel is a semester-long, academic program open to Tenth and Eleventh Grade girls from any public, private, parochial, or charter school in Northeast Ohio. The learner-centered Semester takes place on Laurel’s 150-acre Butler Campus in Russell Township, Ohio, which offers a natural space with terrestrial, aquatic, and agricultural ecosystems for student changemakers to devise solutions for the ecological and social challenges facing urban Cleveland, a rustbelt city grappling with many environmental and social justice issues.
