I believe that community plays a crucial role in the context of environmental justice. Environmental justice specifically advocates for the for the fair and equitable treatment of all individuals despite their race, class, or income.
My practice of community has grown tremendously within this semester. Being surrounded by the same 10 girls everyday definitely strengthens the relationships between each of us and it allowed us to become very close to one another in a short period of time. I never thought that I would grow so many close friends within this semester, but I can definitely say that one positive thing that came out the Environmental Justice Semester, is that I left with amazing people that I call my friends.
EJ Changemakers must partner with their community, listen to its values, and support its priorities.
EJ Changemakers intentionally include multiple perspectives from members of communities who are historically oppressed or disadvantaged to include them in the work of restoring justice.
EJ Changemakers must be strong leaders who set priorities, inspire change, support their team, and manage work, but they must do so without hierarchy or competition. They must lead in the service of their communities and ecosystems.
Together, my peers and I collectively wrote a letter to the County Executie of Ohio, Chris Ronayne. We were promised tht this letter would be handed to him persoanlly. wihtin this letter we expressed what we think our city needs
As a part of my advocacy writing, I created a personal piece of poetry that represents the interconnection between African-American history and water. I connected this poem to Environmental Justice by touching on different aspects of Environmental Racism through out history. I wanted to create a piece that could be easily interpreted yet also have a deeper meaning behind what I wrote.
The Cargill Presentation was definitely one of our most important, informationaly, yet disagreeable meeting with an organization that we ever had. Through out our semester we met with a multitude of indivuals who have each taught us something or given us things to take away, yet not soon ater this particular discussion began, I think we all realized that the best route to take was to just listen to the presenation. The point of this was so that we could learn how to conduct discussions with those who have diffrent opinios fromm oursleves, but we realized that this specific group of poele that came to speak were set om thier belifs and did not want to hear a comment that may have even just slighly disafreed with their ideals surroundin g Cargill.
