In the context of environmental justice, when we consider the extent to which the concept and practice of justice is extensively interconnected with environmental justice, as the latter is concerned with addressing and rectifying the disproportionate burdens and benefits of environmental issues within communities, especially those historically marginalized by society.
During the environmental justice semester, my practice of justice has grown throughout the semester tremendously. From creating an Op-Ed to to inform the community of House Bill 201, to creating a petition to to raise signatures as well as awareness. From getting our Op-Ed published by the Plain Dealer, and making it to where it is available for the community to read and share. From advocating and using my voice along with my peers to convince people to speak up against injustices, to collecting action in order to help transform political policies in order to make positive and restorative steps towards achieving environmental justice within Ohio.
EJ Changemakers recognize oppressive social forces shaping society and are moved to take action against them.
EJ Changemakers must know how to use their voices to convince others to adopt sustainable, just, equitable, and collective behavior.
EJ Changemakers must work with a community coalition to transform institutional and political policies to restore environmental justice.
The Environmental Personal Praxis was written in hopes of personalizing my connection and definition to Environmental Justice and establishing a sense of how I can be a leader within this movement and waysto make a positive impact and change.
My action group along with myself created an Op-Ed to inform the community of House Bill 201 and the dangers of not voicing your disagreements to this bill. This bill is being passed right under us and a lot of people within Ohio have not heard of this bill, therefore the intentions of the Op-Ed isto advocate, inform, and persuade individuals to speak against this bill by calling thier local legislators and voicing their concers if it were to pass. There are many adverse affects of not adopting new emission standards within Ohio and we wanted to portray that message in a way where people could easily understand and be informed.
Together Faye, Ivey, and I created a petition to raise signatures as well as awareness for House Bill 201. House Bill 201 which was recently unfortunately passed by the Ohio House. If this bill passes in the Senate and is signed into law by Governor Dwine, then this piece would prevent Ohio from adopting California's vehicle emission standards. California's vehicle emission standards.
To go along with the petition as well as the Op-Ed, I personally created a visual poster to help spread awareness and reach more people. There are many ways to grasp the attention of people so I wanted to create a poster for those who are more visual. I used bright colors to entice those who may see it and cause them to want to learn more about Hb 201. At the bottom of the illustration is a QR code where people can scan it and it will take them directly to the petition where there is information about the bill as well as a link to our Op-Ed.
