In the context of environmental justice, the concept of sustainability is interconnected as it is a striving goal in order to achieve the well being of both humans and our planet. Sustainability seeks to ensure that the resources are used and applied in a way that meets the needs of the present without simultaneously compromising the ability of future generations to also meet their own needs.
As part of this objective, environmental justice emphasizes a fair distribution of environmental burdens and benefits. The two concepts advocate for the equitable distribution of resources, as well as the prevention of marginalized communities being disproportionately burdened with environmental risks.
During this semester, I was able to learn more about what achieving a sustainable environment might look like. Through our module summaries, we learned about multiple concepts, such as circular economy, that if implemented, would achieve overall sustainability and environmental stewardship.
EJ Changemakers know that structural change drives, and will heal, the environmental crisis. They are informed on how government, business, and social structures are the primary drivers of the environmental crisis, and envision how to revise and reimagine them to restore environmental justice.
EJ Changemakers make informed choices in their day-to-day routines to sustain and regenerate our planet, while also acknowledging that individual-level choices are necessary but insufficient to restore environmental justice.
