Dear Fawcett Community,
It has been a wonderful term in Fawcett so far. Students have excelled in their efforts to live up to the academy values and academic standards. We have enjoyed watching year seven students settle into the college and begin their Secondary journey in such a positive way. Below are two accounts from Eliza and Stephan in 7A describing their starts to Leigh Academy Blackheath. Moreover, it has been our pleasure to work with year eleven as they prepare for their upcoming GCSE examinations. It has been a joy to watch them demonstrate their resilience and scholarship in what can be a challenging time.
Our tutors are an integral and invaluable part of Fawcett. Not only do they deliver our personal development curriculum, but they also provide irreplaceable support and care to all of the young people we have the privilege to serve in Fawcett. A continued thank you to Ms Crawley and Ms Lawrence who are so key in their contributions to the life and wellbeing of students in Fawcett college.
We would like to offer congratulations to all of those who have strived to attend every day and shown resilience in this regard. Fawcett college has a huge number of students who demonstrate continual scholarship by ensuring they are in lessons and working hard. This can be seen through the fantastic 16,994 merits achieved by the college.
In light of this, Ms Parker and Mr Cowie would like to give a special mention to our students with the top four highest merits:
Isabelle in 7D
Eliza in 7A
Sophie in 7D
Lois in 7D
We also have great news to report with our Reading drive at LAB. Our college has read over 7,689,320 words in Modules 3 and 4. This is nearly the same as both other colleges combined! 7A themselves have read 1,265,191. We are so proud of our Library and the work Ms Medcalf puts into it to make it a buzzing centre to our community.
As we all know, strong attendance is vital to ensuring great outcomes and a good school experience. We are pleased with Fawcett’s overall attendance and the ever present incremental improvements being made in this regard. A huge well done to 7A who have the highest attendance in year seven and second highest attendance in the whole academy. And a big well done to 8A that also has exceptional attendance also.
Many thanks to all in Fawcett College and have a wonderful Easter break.
Ms Parker and Mr Cowie
Stephan in 7A:
So far, my experience at LAB has been welcoming and easy to settle in, and now it is a second home. I really enjoy attending LAB because the teachers have made our lessons easy to understand while also providing us with a great extent of knowledge. This way of learning makes me happy to be at school and also excited to learn.
In primary my experience with English was not so enjoyable, but here at LAB I have already gained new information and revisited parts of the subject that I was not very familiar with and tried my hardest to get better, and now I can proudly say that English is one of my best-performing subjects; although it's not my favourite, that spot is for PE thanks to Mr Tebbutt!
When I’m older, my dream job is to be a professional Basketball player with the help of Unifrog, a platform provided by LAB. That dream is already starting to become a reality. Since I joined Leigh Academy Blackheath, I have made many new friendships and obtained lots of new knowledge. I feel safe at LAB because all the teachers are happy to listen and help me and others with any challenges or concerns I may encounter.
I have loved my school journey so far because, in all honesty, settling in has been a lot easier than I expected and I continue to expect the same from such an amazing school.
If anyone is looking for a secondary school that they will enjoy attending, LAB has to be the first option! Thank you for listening, well reading, what I have had to say about Leigh Academy Blackheath, and thank you to LAB for the opportunity to attend such a fantastic school.
Eliza in 7A:
My first few modules at LAB have been prodigious and just a great experience.
All the people in my class are wonderful and have made me feel at home. Every lesson in this school is enjoyable and more of an exciting challenge than Primary. All the teachers in this school are welcoming and try to push you to become the best version of yourself and work as hard as possible, and the lunch in the canteen has an ample variety of food available for us, which is so much more better than Primary.
Our school helps us more by having an additional lesson that we didn’t have in primary, in this lesson we get to learn how to revise efficiently and plan revision periods. This lesson helps me with my work and also helps with my organisation skills. This lesson will continue to help me throughout life. We have chromebooks, given to us by school, and are learning lots of useful computing skills, for example how to touch-type properly.
My perspective on subjects has changed a lot since coming here, this is because of the ways the teachers teach certain lessons ( e.g P.E, English, Computing, Geography, R.E), now these are all one of my favourite subjects to be taught.
In this school, we can receive achievements for fantastic work these include: merits, trips and a badge for certain subjects or at the end of a full module and we can get a recognition certificate from either a teacher or our form tutor.
During tutor time, we get to go on this app called Unifrog on the Chromebooks that helps us find more careers in our favourite subjects, this will then help us in the future as to what subjects we have to study to achieve that job.
Ever since coming to LAB, I have learnt a lot of new things that have helped me improve my knowledge and understanding and different perspectives on certain subjects and topics.I have really enjoyed the clubs and societies here as there is a large variety and so much to be involved in, so we can all learn new interests in different sports or subjects that we didn’t have in primary.
I am really enjoying my first few modules at LAB, this is because the time that I’ve spent here so far has been really fun, informative and beneficial.
