By 15th January, students will have been assessed on all four criteria in maths: Criteria A - Knowledge, Criteria B - Noticing patterns, Criteria C - Communication and Criteria D - maths in a real world context. These assessments are targeted at developing different skills in preparation for their maths GCSE examinations.

We would like to take this opportunity welcome Ms Shearn to the maths team and the LAB family. Ms Shearn will be supporting Year 9 with tailored maths tutoring sessions.

Maths Club

Despite the recent Covid-19 restrictions, the Maths Club has made a fantastic start to the 2020-2021 academic year!

The Maths Club allows students to participate in fun and competitive activities. Students will not only learn new material, but most importantly will apply prior knowledge gained from school to solve challenging problems.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, we have moved online where materials are sent out weekly and consist of quizzes (the Weekly Mathematical Challenge), problem solving discussions and strategies. The resources are designed to encourage and challenge students to think and to engage them in online and independent learning.

Up to now almost 40 students have shown interest. A considerable number of them have been consistently performing well in the Weekly Mathematical Challenge and we are impressed by their work ethic, motivation and commitment to learning.

To challenge our students and build up their resilience to tackle harder maths problems we are excited to enter students in the UKMT competitions. More details can be found here: https://www.ukmt.org.uk/competitions/solo/junior-mathematical-challenge-paper

Due to the calibre of students at LAB, we believe that we will be able to form a strong team to participate with other like minded students across the country! So, the best time to join the club, for those who have not already done so, is now!

To get an idea of what kind of mathematical problems your children are tackling, the following will be one of week’s 5 problems! Why not have a go yourselves? Don’t forget to show your working out!
