This term, we will be following different lines of inquiry to help us to find out about how “Forces of nature can sometimes transform the physical world..”
The lines of inquiry we will explore are:
Why there are different types of rock and pebbles (causation)
How the volcanic eruption affected life in Pompeii (change)
Volcanoes around the world (connection)
As part of our provocation, we looked at how forces of nature can transform the physical world, which sparked some interesting discussions. Following on from this we observed how a volcanic eruption can change the physical world as well as comparing the similarities and differences of a volcano and a mountain. Using Google we explored the remains of the city of Pompeii in Italy. We are interested to learn about how Mount Vesuvius destroyed the city.
A scavenger hunt helped us decipher essential vocabulary. It was an engaging way to deepen our understanding! We were introduced to the terms sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous and wrote about the main difference between the three in preparation for next week's Rocks and Soils day. Children shared some pumice stones and a bracelet made from pumice stones. We learnt about the different layers of the earth.
Rocks Workshop
Year 3 have thoroughly enjoyed our science workshop on rocks with Mr Bonner.
Y3 Forest School
Y3 thoroughly enjoyed taking their inquiry outside during our forest sessions this term. The children created characters from twigs linked to their narrative writing about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the destruction of Pompeii. They also made dens, did some leaf printing and enjoyed some delicious hot chocolate.
