We are offering Robotics and Pre-Engineering as an exciting elective next year, in 2018-2019.
We need $6,777 in materials, including five VEX robotics kits, from Project Lead the Way (PLTW). These materials will serve a class of 20 students.
Also, we still need your help to purchase $2,171 worth of micro:bit kits from Project Lead the Way (PLTW) for our current Intro to Computer Science elective, also called Computer Science for Innovators & Makers (PLTW's name). We started this request in the Fall of 2017.
Please consider donating what you can, even $20. Checks can be made out to our school district: "LAPS" with memo "LAMS computer science kits".
Thank you ahead of time for any help, support, encouragement, volunteering and STEM/CS (Computer Science) career mentoring!
Below is a screenshot and weblink of our LAMS PayPal page, or the very bottom of it, where you can donate online if you click (check) "Misc (Use If No Other Category Applies)" and then add "computer science kits" to "Purpose:" after the amount. Please Un-Check all other Checkboxes at the top of this LAMS PayPal page (automatically filled for registration). Currently this is the only way to donate online, and this is only accessible to families who have a LAPS Student with a 9-digit Student # (since that is required at the top of the webpage). Thank you.
Here is a link to see a micro:bit emulator online (from BBC).
But with your help, we are hoping to bring in the real micro:bits (micro-processors) so our students can learn how to program and create innovative applications (uses). The kits have flex sensors, pressure sensors and LED lights.
Micro:bits are used in our Computer Science for Innovators and Makers course, PLTW's Gateway (middle school) offering. We hope to add their App Creators course next. And then hopefully Automation and Robotics.
Here is the micro:bits kits order summary from Project Lead the Way.
I'll work to keep this need amount updated as we reach close to our goal of $2,171. We have had at least three student/parent donations totally just above $100. Thank you!
Intro to the micro:bit here. / Importance of physical computing hands-on projects (+Plus research paper) here: "Studies show that physical computing projects increase student engagement and learning in computer science education."
LAPS Foundation, Rotary Club of Los Alamos, and LANL Foundation are hopeful community partners.
I am also looking at possible crowdfunding, like DonorsChoose.org (but would prefer avoiding their 2-3% charge). I am also looking into adding a "Donate" online button for e-donations (like PayPal).
Please share this to help promote our need. Let's spread the word.
Thank you Los Alamos Middle School community!!! You all ROCK. You help change the world, changing our students into career-informed dreamers.
Thank you again for any help and support with this need. Thank you for sharing this need.
Checks can be made out to LAPS with memo: LAMS computer science kits, and mailed to >
