NJROTC Does Color Guard Service at LANL

Cadet-Lieutenant Junior-Grade Austin Estrada, Cadet-Seaman Recruit Bella Luke, Cadet-Senior Chief Petty Officer Richard Thompson, and Cadet-Seaman Echo Rogers all served on a color guard honoring those who passed on during the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 in the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The memorial contained pieces of the Pentagon, and contained names of many of the fallen.

There was a large turnout from the employees at LANL in a service to honor the tragedy that unfolded. The NJROTC group came and raised the United States flag along with the New Mexico flag. This year was the marking of 16 years since the tragedy that struck the United States.

JROTC Biathlon

On September 16th, three JROTC cadets from LAHS attended the Biathlon in La Cueva, New Mexico. These cadets put in hard work into making this a memorable occasion.

Cadet/Lieutenant Commander Jacob Torrez, Cadet/Lieutenant Neil Wilkerson and Cadet/Seaman Apprentice Michael Archuleta ran and shot for the Los Alamos High School, competing against high schools like Valley High School, Cleveland High School, El Dorado High School, Highland High School, and others in the Albuquerque area.

The biathlon course consisted of a three mile run with five shots in prone (flat on the ground), kneeling, and standing in between. The air rifle course was set 10 meters away. The runs were under the average 20 minutes.

Cadet Jacob Torrez says, “it was a good experience, and our team was the most experienced from the high school in their shooting and running abilities.” The cadets that competed worked hard and reaped from the rewards.

LAHS Drill Team Competes in First Meet

On Saturday, September 30, the LAHS NJROTC drill team competed in Albuquerque against Monzano, Santa Fe, and Cibola to name a few. This was our first drill meet for the season, and it was a great start. Cadet/Seaman Echo Rogers, the female Color Guard commander, has high hopes for her team. “Early bird started out pretty okay, but there is still improvement we can work on to get to nationals.” For Cadet/Seaman Recruit Salmon, this was his first drill meet. “(The drill meet) was pretty fun. I hope I did well!” This meet was a new experience for many of our commanders, and their performance suggests success for our teams later on.
