Psychology Professor, University of TorontoProtective factors are the characteristics and conditions that build health and resilience in youth and adults and help prevent them from harm and the negative outcomes associated with risk behaviors.
Some protective factors are fixed while others are variable and can change over time.
Protective factors operate in different contexts - individual, family, community, and society. They are cumulative - young people with more protective factors are at lower risk - and correlative - young people with fewer protective factors tend to be at higher risk.
