STEM + Art = STEAM

Our Fall 2020 Survey collect 32 responses from our classmates in grades 6 to 8. We had one teacher complete the survey. We found similar results from last year where students were most interested in Art and STEM topics for sessions.

Why do we need a Girls Build at LAPCMS?

Based on the data from GreatSchools (September 2020), our team is based out of LA Promise Charter Middle School. At out school, we consist of grade 6 to 8 students. Out of approximately 273 students, ~57% of of student body are male students and 43% are female students - that's the percent our team also represents! When compared to the City of Los Angeles, females represent 50.4% for all ages (US Census Bureau, 2019). It is important for us as our school's female leaders to represent the minority percent and to create a space where female leaders can organize in a safe space. This will prepare us to join the women leaders of the City of Los Angeles and more!

How are we representing our school's diversity?

The City of Los Angeles consists of Hispanic/LatinX (48.6%), White (28.5%), Black (8.9%), Asian (11.6%), Two/Other Races (2.6%), and Other (US Census Bureau, 2019). Although our school currently represents less than the overall number of ethnicities and races found in the City of Los Angeles, our school consists of Hispanic/LatinX students (66%) which accounts for the largest ethnicity/race in the City of Los Angeles. And our student body also represents two of the minority ethnicities/races which are 32% Black and 2% Two or More Races. This means it is important that our team's leadership also reflects members who are Hispanic/LatinX and Black students. This is very important to our team and making sure all races at our school are represented on our team.
Our team's goal is to increase the overall health/ wellness by focusing on STEM/STEAM outreach at our school.

April 1, 2020
Dear Girls Build Community,
In response to the March 13, 2020 notice for schools in the Los Angeles County to temporarily close, our LAPCMS Girls Build team have adapted to virtual meetings. We understand that many of our students and their families are experiencing various challenges. We hope all the students in our community and their families stay safe and well, placing their personal needs and their families first. The team will continue to meet the expectations of the LA Promise Fund Girls Build program and will continue to work on our team deliverables to the best of our abilities. The team's goal will continue to focus on STEM College & Career topics to provide additional virtual experiences and to preserve the mission of the LAPF Girls Build program while making sure we adhere to the socio-emotional demands of our current reality. Should you need an update of our team, please contact us through our Instagram or fell free to email me: kristym@lapromisefund.org.
Very truly yours, Ms. Mar <-- (That is what the kids call me)
