Phonics Workshops

The cheat guide to phonics in EYFS!

Learning to read has changed drastically since many of us were last at school. Please see below a breakdown of key vocabulary that we use across the EYFS and KS1 that will help you to support your child at home

'Codes' - These are the written letters, for example 's' or 'sh'.

'Uppercase codes' - These are capital letters. When children learn to read these they will refer to them by name.

'Lowercase codes' - These are the lowercase letters that appear within words. When children learn to read these they will refer to them by the sound they make. For example 'sh in ship, s in snake or c-a-k-e in cake.

Digraph - This is when two letters go together to create a different sound. Examples include sh/th/ng/nk.

Tri-graph - This is when three codes go together to create a different sound. Examples include igh, in, might and light.

Split diagraph - This is when a digraph is split by a consonant. Examples include cake, take and kite.

Decode - to read words using the codes.

Encode - to spell the words using the sounds.

Blending - to merge together separate sounds in a word, for example h-o-t becomes hot.

Segmenting - breaking down words into units of sound to spell.

Tricky words - these are words that cannot be sounded out.

CVC words - these are words that have are formed by consonant, vowel, consonant. For example cat, hat and ship.

We have been blown away by the attendance at our phonics sessions. Thank you so much for coming along to share in the children's learning. We really appreciate this, especially as we know that parents and carers have such busy lives.

Next term we will run a maths focus session. More details about this will follow.
