Communication and Language

The children are busy developing their communication and language skills throughout the day within the Early Years. This involves the children developing their listening and attention skills, their understanding of language, as well as their speaking skills. These skills progress through the developing of a love of reading, listening to stories and talking about what happens within stories, as well as developing their role play.

For example, in Reception this week the children have been busy exploring the story of 'What the Ladybird Heard' by Julia Donaldson, retelling the story using words that they have heard in the story and creating their own stories. In Nursery, the children have been joining in with the retelling of 'The Gruffalo' and talking about the different features of what the Gruffalo looks like.

As an academy we also use 'Makaton' to support children's use and understanding of language.

Please explore the videos below which explain key vocabulary that is used within the Early Years, as well as ideas that you can practise at home.
