Diversity and Inclusion Parent Group
On Tuesday morning, our Diversity and Inclusion Parent Group met. Below are the questions that we discussed within the meeting. If there is anything below that you feel you could be involved in/help with in any way, please let us know via the academy's email and address your correspondence for the attention of Mrs Neame.
A huge thank you to those who attended and gave us some amazing ideas as to how we can make it more inclusive here at Langley Park.
What do we already do to promote diversity and inclusion outside of our curriculum?
Diversity Ambassadors - who are a group of children across KS2 who meet with Mrs Neame every week to plan and discuss ways in which we can all promote diversity, equality and inclusion at LALP.
Careers Fair - to highlight opportunities that the children could go on to do beyond school. We gathered a range of visitors and videos from a range of people and careers to share with the children.
SMSC and British Values widgets on our display boards in class to make links to these within our learning.
Weekly updates/information on this page every week.
Picture News assemblies - every Monday, a member of SLT shares the Picture News story for that week. Within the slides, once the news story has been shared, links are made to a British Value, a Protected Characteristic, UN Rights of the Child and our Learner Profile Attributes. The children are then given time on a Thursday to reflect on the story and make connections to their own lives.
Each term, every class has a Protected Characteristic lesson where they learn about a Protected Characteristic through a picture book. The class then have time to reflect, discuss as a class and complete an activity.
What can we do as an academy to positively impact diversity and inclusion further?
Coffee mornings/networking opportunities.
Virtual meetings.
Create connections with a Global Partnership School.
Bring more cultural cooking opportunities into school.
'International Come Dine With Me' videos?
Share recipes in the newsletter weekly.
How can we encourage parents/carers to teach their children about cultural diversity and inclusion and engage the wider community?
Facebook group for parents to network within.
Encourage parents/carers to access any training/advice that we share within the newsletter.
Get parents/carers in to share their knowledge/culture with the children - especially cooking.
Consider accessibility with everything always being digital - could surveys/information be sent home on paper?
Parent Forums - invite parents/carers in to share information that they have.
Diversity Ambassador Meeting
On Monday afternoon, our Diversity Ambassadors got together to plan our 'World Day for Cultural Diversity', which will be taking place on Friday 16th May. The children have been planning the activities and workshops and have started to put some posters together to share what has been arranged to advertise around the school. The children are extremely excited to share the plans once finalised.
More information about this day will be coming out soon! Watch this space.
