Installing Apps and Extensions

A growing number of students are choosing to bring personal technology – such as Internet-connected mobile devices and smartphones – to use during the school day.  

As nearly all of our educational applications and subscriptions are Internet-based, any web browser can securely access them from any network.  Students may access their school email and other applications such as Google Apps, Canvas, Edgenuity, and Naviance from their own device.

BYOD limitations and terms

Some points to keep in mind if a student and parent choose to bring personal technology into school:

• Use of such devices are subject to guidelines and limitations established by classroom teachers, building administration, and the school handbook.

• The District takes no responsibility for any issue or loss arising from the choice to use a personal device.

• Per Policy IIBF-E, the District reserves the right to search any and all personal technology devices brought upon the school campus or to any school activity or on any school bus if in the judgment of the supervisor or administrator in charge there is a reasonable suspicion to believe it contains evidence of the violation of a District rule, policy, or state or federal law which could subject the student to discipline.

• The District cannot install or offer licensed software on personal computers.

• The District cannot and will not offer maintenance, troubleshooting, or repair services on any personal equipment.

• All devices using our Internet connection will send their traffic through our content filter.  The use of personal VPNs to redirect traffic or bypass filtering is blocked.

• Students in grades 9-12 cannot access their network private folders on their personal device.

Fremont1_BYOD wireless network

The Fremont1_BYOD network is offered as a convenience for students and staff.  Due to the huge array of devices -- and different OS versions, updates, settings, personal security software, wireless settings, etc -- neither the District nor the Tech Office staff will be able to assist with connection issues.

• Generally, a device must be fully up-to-date with its OS as well as its browser.  BYOD does fingerprinting on devices to identify what they are, and an outdated browser or OS may fail the check.

• Also, a user MUST sign in with their @landerschools.org account to use BYOD.  We have heard of a few who connect and then swipe away the login screen.  All users must be authenticated.  On some devices it can take 30-40 seconds for the login screen to appear.

• Devices such as IPhones and Android phones will not connect to BYOD.

Please understand that we cannot troubleshoot personal devices except in the most general terms.  We have a number of test devices here (Macintosh, PC, IPad) that we test BYOD settings on, and we ensure it works on these devices.  We listen for general trends, but if BYOD does not connect for someone's personal device, we really cannot do anything to assist.
