Course Overview:

This course introduces students to the structure of medical terms, including prefixes, suffixes, root words, and combining forms. Using the Dean Vaughn Medical Terminology 350 (2nd Edition) video series, students will learn a simplified and mnemonic-based approach to memorizing and understanding medical language. Every third week, students will contribute to a "Disease Book" — a student-created reference project designed to reinforce terminology through research, illustration, and presentation.

Course Materials:

• Dean Vaughn Medical Terminology 350 (2nd Edition) Video Series

• Disease Book Template (provided by instructor)

• Composition Notebook (Unruled or Graphing) Walmart.com Link Will be needed by week 3.

• 3X5 Note Cards (350 Needed for Terms)

• 1 inch binder. (for handouts and worksheet for studying)

• Sticky Tabs (Walmart.com Link)

Weekly Schedule Overview

Week 1–2: Introduction & Units 1–2

• Activities: Watch Dean Vaughn Units 1–2, complete vocabulary sheets, interpretive  worksheet

• Flashcards for unit 1 and 2 

• Assessment: Exam at end of Weeks1&2

• Focus:Cadiovascular system

• Requirements:

  • 5  diseases from  list

  • Medical terminology breakdown

  • Description of the disease

  • Signs & Symptoms

  • Medical terms used in context

  • Visual or diagram

• Due: End of Week 3 (will be a weekly test grade for that week)

Week 4–5: Units 3-4

• Focus:  Integumentary system (skin, hair, nails)

• Focus: Urinary system (kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra)

Projects: There will be projects assignned throughout the year to be presented by students.

• Projects will be Group projects (everyuone in group must contribute)
