This course prepares students to become entry-level EMTs (Emergency Medical Technicians) by teaching them to provide life-saving care in prehospital settings. Aligned with the National EMS Education Standards and the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) requirements, students will gain knowledge in emergency medical care, patient assessment, airway management, trauma response, and medical emergencies.
This course uses Prehospital Emergency Care, 12th Edition by Joseph J. Mistovich, and includes lecture, skills labs, simulations, and clinical/ride-along opportunities.
Upon successful completion, students will be eligible and required to test for NREMT EMT certification, pending fulfillment of all course, attendance, clinical, and compliance requirements.

AHA BLS CPR for Healthcare Providers
Eligibility to test for National Registry EMT (NREMT)
Texas Department of State Health Services EMT Certification (if applicable)
All students must pass a mandatory drug screening before beginning clinical experiences or ride-alongs.
Testing will be conducted through a school-approved provider.
A negative result is required to continue in the course.
Refusal or failure of the drug test may result in dismissal from the program and ineligibility for certification.
Parent/guardian consent is required for students under 18.
Students must provide current immunization records, including:
Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (Tdap)
Hepatitis B series
Varicella (chickenpox)
MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
Annual Influenza (Flu) Shot – current season required
Documentation must be submitted before clinical participation. (NLT October 15)
Students are required to wear the approved EMT uniform during Thursdays class, labs, field training, and clinical experiences.
Uniform Requirements:

Class EMT shirt (provided by the school)
Hair must be neat and secured; no excessive jewelry or visible piercings during clinical activity
Students not in uniform may be sent home, marked absent and not recieve credit for these hours.
Students must complete observation hours in a clinical or EMS setting.
48 Hours EMS ride-alongs
24 Hours Emergency Room
All required documents (immunizations, drug test, consent forms) must be submitted before participation.
Transportation and scheduling details will be coordinated with the instructor.
if transportation is needed by student arangemnts will be made either with instructor or program director.
Student is required to contact EMS Chief Sarah Wallace: swallace@hamiltonhospital.org 1 week before desired shifts.
Students must be in full uniform and display professional behavior at all times. (Shirts tucked in and Belts)
Due to certification requirements, consistent attendance is critical. Excessive absences may prevent students from meeting course hour minimums required for certification eligibility.

Adherence to safety protocols
Academic honesty
Team collaboration
No cellphone usage during Clinical/Ride-along
Training from EMS and ER staff is required
Homework and classwork still needs to be completed
Tutoring and remediation opportunities are available before or after school. Students are strongly encouraged to seek help early and stay engaged throughout the course.
A signed acknowledgment form will be distributed and must be returned confirming that:
Student and guardian understand the drug testing and immunization requirements
Student agrees to adhere to the uniform policy
Student commits to participating fully in all skills, labs, and testing
