SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING

Relationship Skills @ LHS

Teacher Lessons:

    • Healthy Dating vs Toxic Relationships (Sicilia)
    • Tying Ties (Evans)
      • Literally learning how to tie a necktie on self and others.
    • English 9 In House on Mango Street, we discuss the dynamic of relationships that Esperanza has with one another. We look closely at her actions, and compare them to our own relationships. We discuss communicating well within relationships - be it family, romantic, or friendship. (Phifer)
    • Any time students work in groups, we talk about skills that ensure success for the group, such as respectful discussion, leadership, fulfilling individual obligations, taking turns, etc. (Garner)

Classroom Guidance Lessons (RamFAM):

    • Personality Test (All)
      • Handout to be completed by students
    • Blobs & Lines
    • This or That

Responsible Decision Making @ LHS

Teacher Lessons:

    • Checking, Loans, Credit Cards, Etc. (Newman, Theodore, Irwin, Hardin)
    • Science curriculum is a great way to teach students it's okay to fail. We are not designed to be perfect in every aspect of our lives, which is difficult for many students to accept. Learning from our mistakes and addressing the corrections in a positive manner helps build self-esteem and confidence both academically and emotionally. (Balcom)
    • In English 12, seniors complete a project in which they reflect back on their years in school and identify an issue or problem they feel they can address. Many of their projects can impact lower grades. One year, some of the seniors spoke to eighth graders during lunch in the media center. (Garner)

Classroom Guidance Lessons:

    • Lifeboat Exercise (Vetter)
    • Grade Check Bingo

Self Awareness @ LHS

Teacher Lessons:

    • Soundtrack of my Life (Haman)
      • It's a list of what would be on a mixtape that would explain who they are to a stranger. I let them use colored pencils and markers and make album art if they like...and let them listen to music as long as they have earbuds or headphones. You'd be surprised how many of them come back and ask me if I listened to the songs on their list.
    • FACS - Meditation (Sicilia)
    • English 10 - We study Tuesday with Morrie by Mitch Albom. The book is the last lesson delivered by a college professor who is dying of ALS as dictated to one of his students. It helps us all to realize the things in life we take for granted and how we deal with the grieving process. (Wallace)

Classroom Guidance Lessons (RamFAM):

    • 2 Truths and a Lie

Self Management @ LHS

Teacher Lessons:

    • “Self management is addressed by requiring students to complete work but at times giving them the option of how & when they complete the work.” (Jolly)
    • Smartphone usage/addiction (Haman)
      • The listening unit taught in Oral Communication which contains descriptions of the different types/levels of listening, including when we aren't really listening.
    • English 9. Most conversations about SEL happen organically as we discuss the actions, motivations, and decisions of others in literature. For example, in The Odyssey, we discuss the symbolic journey of our own lives. Recently, students completed a small writing assignment reflecting on their personal goals in life, including what would stand in their way. They became self aware of barriers that could stand in their way. We discuss relationship skills as we look at the interactions of characters with one another. (Phifer)

Classroom Guidance Lessons:

    • It Costs How Much Activity

Social Awareness @ LHS

Teacher Lessons:

    • Words Can Never Hurt Me (Haman)
      • Students break into groups and draw the outline of a person. Then they write down all the hurtful things they've ever said or have had said to them. This can get intense and/or graphic. Then they may share some of them and talk about how it made them feel. Then they crumple it up...but before they throw it away, I tell them that we can forgive, and ask them to "put the papers back the way they were." Of course, the wrinkles can't be removed. I tell them how, although they can be forgiven, words can leave marks that can't be undone.
    • “Many history lessons involve hierarchies, status quo, and the processes involved in opening those systems to more people. Asking students to place themselves within these historical events broadens their sense of empathy, fairness, and citizenship. Also, students are required to reflect on their personal beliefs and determine how to improve themselves and to be more responsible societal members.” (Franklin)
    • “Social awareness comes every time we discuss a work of literature as we pay close attention to the cultural or social norms of the setting in the work.” (Morton)

Classroom Guidance Lessons (RamFAM):

    • Social Media - Real or Fantasy
