Camp Quality Arkansas

Volunteer Opportunity

About Camp Quality Arkansas - We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established in 1989. We support children affected by cancer and their families. All services are free of charge to the families.

Our biggest event is a week long camp each summer - Camp Quality Arkansas 2020 is scheduled for June 14th - 19th but volunteers are asked to arrived June 13th to help with camp set up. Camp is held at Camp Powderfork in Bald Knob, Arkansas. We need around 100 volunteers at each summer camp and our needs continue to grow year after year.

Our camp is unique because every camper is paired with an over 18 volunteer as a “companion.” A companion is the camper’s friend and support for the week. We also take siblings (without cancer) so long as room and volunteers are available. We always try our best to give companions a heads up about their campers to make sure they are comfortable with the position.

For those who are thinking about a career in communications or simply enjoy writing, we have just the thing: the Boston University Summer Journalism Academy.

For the last 11 years, students are taught by award-winning journalists, such as Pulitzer Prize winner Lara Salahi and Sherrod Blakely, who will show them how to follow facts and get to the heart of stories affecting communities. From protests to town hall meetings to interviewing local and state politicians, our students are covering issues that matter in their communities.

Students also have the option of selecting a photojournalism track, taught by veteran photojournalist Stephen Haines. He worked as a staff photographer, assignment and photo editor for the Boston Globe. He will help students sharpen their camera skills to teach them the basics of visual storytelling.

No matter what session your student(s) select, they will learn practical skills that they can apply to any career.

Two-week sessions begin on June 21, July 5, and July 19.

Do you know students who would be a good fit for the Summer Journalism Academy? Encourage them to learn more by visiting our website, and to apply soon, as spots are limited.

If students are accepted to the program and pay the registration fee by April 24, they will receive a special discount of $200 off the tuition using this discount code online: 21BUADMISSIONS
