This is information about the Air Force ROTC options available to students. For students who want to attend college, I can be their point of contact as they work on applying for an Air Force ROTC scholarship or have questions about the process. If they are not eligible for scholarships out of high school, then I can help them look into other in-college AFROTC scholarship opportunities. For those exceptional students looking for the ultimate challenge, I can get them in touch with an Air Force Academy Liaison to start the application process for the United States Air Force Academy. For students who are looking for a job instead of college, I can put them in touch with someone to help figure out their career options as an enlisted member of the Air Force right out of school.
First, let me tell you what Air Force ROTC is all about. AFROTC is an officer-training program, and students who successfully complete the program will commission in the Air Force as a 2d Lieutenant. Students in the AFROTC program attend a typical 4-year college (such as University of Arkansas) or start out at selected community colleges in the local area and transfer to the 4-year college to complete a bachelor’s degree. In addition to regular classes, students attend a AFROTC weekly lecture class, physical training sessions and Leadership Lab each semester. Leadership Lab is an opportunity for freshmen and sophomores to learn more about the fundamentals of the Air Force and ROTC and for junior and senior cadets to hold leadership positions. Minimum time commitment is around 5-7 hours per week, but they can do more if they have the time – the cadets always have other projects in the works. When college is complete, they start an exciting career in the Air Force, as a pilot, a nurse, an engineer, or almost any other career.
To apply for high school scholarships, students can visit http://www.afrotc.com/ at any time. The application window for the High School Scholarship Program available to individuals graduating this academic year opened on 1 June. Students interested in competing for this opportunity have until 1 December to complete the application process. To be eligible for scholarship consideration, students must achieve an SAT composite of 1180 (math and critical reading portions only) or ACT composite of 26 and attain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. The scholarships section will also look for some type of leadership experience (such as captain of a sports team, organizer of a volunteer effort, or head of the debate team, etc.), the more examples of leadership and community involvement, the better.
If you have any questions at all, please feel free to call me at 479-575-3651 or email me at rotc030@uark.edu at any time if I can help you or your students.
