Congratulations on taking an important step in building your future. In considering enrolling in work-based learning (WBL) you are investing in yourself and your community. Work-based learning is open to students entering their junior or senior year.
Step 1.5 (your first step was getting to this point, remember?):
During spring registration, choose Work-based Learning Experience as you select your courses. You will not choose the specific program at this
point. Your counselor and our work-based learning coordinator will work with you to create a plan and schedule before the next school year begins.
If you have already registered for classes and decide to enroll, connect with Ms. Miller (miller@lakelandunion.org or visit room 216), You should check in with your counselor to ensure you have room in your schedule before starting the process.
Step 2: Complete the form that will be emailed to you so we can learn about the type of experience you hope to have.
Step 3: Connect with potential employers to secure employment. Are you already employed? You may be able to continue your current employment for WBL.
We will work with you to identify potential employers, apply, and interview for your position.
Step 4: Once your employment is secured, complete and submit the required agreements for your program (Employability Skills or Youth Apprenticeship)
Agreements outline the roles and responsibilities of you, your parents/guardians, your employer, and Lakeland Union High School.
Ms. Miller will provide you with the appropriate forms for your program.
Once your agreements are signed and submitted you can begin to work your scheduled hours.
Acceptance into work-based learning is not guaranteed. The following are considered when approving work-based learning experiences:
Academic record
You should have a 2.0 cumulative GPA when entering a WBL and are expected to have a C- or higher in all classes while
participating in the program. If leaving school during the school day for work, that privilege may be suspended until your
grades have recovered.
Attendance record
Strong attendance is important to your education and your employment. Your high school absenteeism rate (beginning your freshman year) will be considered in approving your participation. Your absenteeism rate should be no less than 90%.
Unexcused absences and tardies do not positively impact your attendance record.
Behavior record
As part of Lakeland's Work-based Learning program you are not only building your personal brand, you are also representing your school. You are expected to uphold the LUHS codes of conduct
To maintain your eligibility to participate you must:
Meet the requirements outlined in your Work-based Learning Agreement.
Make positive progress on your Skills Checklist.
Maintain a positive academic, attendance, and behavior record
