Apprenticeships
Apprenticeship:
A combination of on-the-job training (OJT) and related classroom instruction under the supervision of a journey-level craft person or trade professional in which workers learn the practical and theoretical aspects of a highly skilled occupation.
Apprenticeship opportunities are available through a variety of ways, including the Idaho Workers Opportunity Network, Idaho Department of Labor, North Idaho College Workforce Training Center, Community Colleges of Spokane, and individual businesses. In apprenticeship training, you learn while you're employed. In addition, on-the-job training is supplemented by formal classes each year. The training period, or apprenticeship, varies in length from one to five years according to the complexity of the occupation you select. If you would like to join the workforce immediately after graduation, we encourage you to consider an apprenticeship.
Top 5 Reasons to Pursue an Apprenticeship
Learn While You Earn – Apprenticeships are paid positions with benefits. In some cases, you may see an increase in pay as you develop your skills.
Earn a nationally recognized certificate – Depending on the career and necessary training, a Registered Apprenticeship can take as little as a year to complete and will result in a nationally recognized certificate or credential.
Gain Practical Experience & Extensive Training – On-the-job training is a key component of an apprenticeship, which means you start your career with a significant amount of relevant experience already on your resume.
Advanced Education at a Low Cost – Apprentices receive education and training both inside and outside the workplace. Some employers cover some or all of the cost associated with the required education.
Mentoring & Support – Much of the on-the-job training includes direct supervision and takes place one-on-one or in a small group setting, allowing you to ask questions and learn from colleagues. You are learning from the experts.
