ONedSsChat and Me
How can we celebrate our differences? We can share them! What better way to celebrate together than to use such a versatile platform such as Twitter or YouTube. Connections nationally and globally create a whole new realm of real-world learning and inquiry.
The ability to provide students with connections such as this is incredibly valuable. Just think, would they every have that opportunity otherwise?
After much planning and many meetings... we held our first ONedSsChat this morning (Tuesday October 10, 2017)!
We had many different schools K-12 take part in this meeting. Our topic was; "Who am I?"
Our 3 questions were;
What makes you unique?
Do you feel the need to change who are you when you are around others? Why?
How can we celebrate our differences?
The Student Chat answers were coming in through both; our Twitter hashtag, #ONedSsChat and our YouTube Live recording space. We had 4 teachers moderating the background of the chat- posts, answers, etc. while the students took over and led this initiative!
What an amazing way to connect students nationally/globally... in this specific chat, we had classes from all across Ontario including; Angus, North Perth, Peel, Ottawa, and more!

IMPACT
Connecting as students, discussing leadership and character education encourages inquiry when exploring identity. Encouraging others that it is ok to be different and to celebrate what makes you unique is so important, especially in schools! Connecting students and giving them the opportunity to share and support one another throughout this exploration promotes empathy and acceptance.
Student leadership is incredibly important to create the foundation of a safe space to explore. Student leaders are constantly defining their digital presence and building their digital literacy skills. Student leaders are our future.
Using social media spaces to connect in a positive way will change the way of education.

"Working through Science & Technology with your students? Connect with _______________ (expert suggestions)!"
(See logo above)
The Digital Human Library has been teaching me all about media literacy in education. My current prominent role is to revamp and reconstruct the Digital Human Library Facebook page.
My primary goals include:
My artifact is a strand of subject specific photos I created to share on social media. These posts are intended to be used as eye-catchers for teachers who are looking into a specific strand within the Ontario Curriculum such as; Science & Technology, The Arts, Language, Social Studies, Health & Physical Education, Mathematics, French, Indigenous Studies and Kindergarten! My hope is, that teachers will see the logo and stop to look into the caption and instructions. This was my original idea, and my next extension includes making unit specific graphics to share in a similar way.
My Artifact: what I learned through creating this artifact
Using Facebook to generate social media support and connections is much more difficult than I expected. Facebook differentiates from Twitter primarily because Twitter thrives on hashtags, tagging and re-tweeting, while Facebook is more of a personal life platform rather than social. This is why I chose to make logos, they are interactive! Facebook uses a news feed where the most relevant posts appear most often. Logos generate more interaction therefore creating an engaging example for people to discover.
My Artifact: what it provides to the internship organization
This artifact benefits the Digital Human Library because it not only provides new, engaging logos for the Facebook page, these logos can be used on versatile platforms, such as twitter and on the Digital Human Library website. The Digital Human Library thrives on constant connection and communication. These Logos are providing a new way to connect and also build the organization by openly addressing each subject area in the Ontario Curriculum.
My Artifact: enhancing my understanding of teaching & learning
This artifact enhances my understanding of teaching and learning by challenging me to address the curriculum and dig deeper to find specific topics/themes/strands that teachers will be teaching. When I find these ideas, I make a logo, a logo is more likely to catch the eye rather than text. Teachers may see the logo, realize they are teaching that topic and can address the experts listed in the caption connected to DHL. The teacher is then able to connect their classroom with an expert to enhance learning! This artifact activity has encouraged me to step into the role of a teacher and think about what teachers may be looking for when browsing social media. When I think about it this way, I am able to identify some ways we may be able to reach teachers! This activity has also taught me the very distinct difference between Twitter and Facebook, and the capabilities and limitations that come with both!

Podcasting is redefining itself and making a huge splash in the world of education!
VoicEd radio is a platform that gives professionals a chance to share educational experiences through podcasting.
Here is how I was introduced to VoicEd radio and the wide world of podcasting...
Helen DeWaard introduced us to Sarah Anne Lalonde, who is a teacher candidate in Ottawa. Sarah conducts her own podcast via SoundCloud and VoicEd radio called "Que Sera Sarah?" Sarah interviews teacher candidates about everything EDU. A colleague and I participate in a podcast with Sarah, which was our first introduction to the world of podcasting! I absolutely loved the process and the conversations around education.
Being Education Students - Lakehead U Teacher Candidates Jonathan, Madison & Rochelle - Episode 36
Sarah then invited us to be a part of #ONEDMENTORS (also broadcast on VoicEd radio) Teacher Candidate chat "Get A Job" on January 18, 2018. During this chat, teacher candidates has the opportunity to speak with education professionals about what they want to see on resumes and in interviews. This was a very insightful conversation for me and I am very grateful to have made the connections I did! my biggest take away from this conversation was the phrase; "you are not just hiring me, you are hiring my PLN." I love this quote as it is absolutely true, you are not just hiring me, you are hiring ALL of my connections and networks.
I have also been involved in another #ONEDMENTORS called "In Praise of Ordinary" on January 25, 2018. We talked about what it is like to be ordinary in a world that constantly expects extraordinary. My biggest take away from this conversation was to be kind to yourself... from a type A perfectionist, I constantly have to remind myself that doing my very best is enough.
Sarah and I then had many conversations via Twitter about how podcasting works, how to create and produce one, and so much more. I can easily say she has become a wonderful mentor of mine throughout this podcasting planning thus far. I look forward to the new learnings she has to offer me in the future as well!
I could not believe the connections I had made in such a short amount of time through podcasting! Educators are awesome!
I have had the unique opportunity of being involved with the Digital Human Library since the beginning of Professional Year (September 2017). I have absolutely loved all that they have taught me so far.
My big question quickly transitioned into; How can I incorporate podcasting into my internship experience?
I proposed this idea to my internship lead; Leigh Cassell and she loved the idea! This became an opportunity to create yet another outlet to share and build the dHL community.
I conducted my practice podcast with my best friend Courtney Szeto. Here is the link to our podcast;
We had the wonderful priveledge of meeting with Stephen Hurley, the founder of VoicEd radio to discuss the relationship between dHLOnAir and VoicEd radio. We discussed all the different opportunities this podcast could hold.
It has been a journey and there is so much learning to come... with excitement in the air, we invite you to tune in.
Our podcast channel is making it's very first debut on Friday February 9, 2018 with Mark MacAllister from the North Carolina Zoo.
