During our first class together, our teacher; J. Copeland, placed children's literature around the room for us to take a look at as inspiration and "minds-on" as we jumped into our first day learning about Elementary Art!
I chose "The Mixed-Up Chameleon" by Eric Carle
September 13, 2017
My heart is made of red, orange, dark pink, light pink and white.
In my heart, I feel a lot of emotions passed down from my Mother, and therefore I chose to represent not only my heart, but also hers. The large proportioned side represents my Mother’s heart and the smaller heart is my immature, not yet grown heart, for her heart fades into mine as we are one in the same. My heart is placed in the middle of the page as my mother is and will always be involved in my life. She has passed to my heart many hurts, worries, hopes, and joys throughout my life. The hurts and worries have been overcome and overwhelmed by loud hopes and joys, so you almost can no longer see, hear, or feel them. My heart is smaller, as I am still flourishing as an adult, a professional, and a human. In my heart there is a new colour that is not as dominant in my Mother’s heart, which is represented in the colour of white. White bring to mind new experiences and great excitement; excitement to become a teacher and excitement to learn! Altogether, I am full of gratitude and thankfulness that my Mother has helped my heart grow in many different ways. My heart is surrounded by a mixed light pink, which signifies gratefulness to my Mother, for my heart is because of my Mother.

Reflection:
I absolutely loved this activity. It gave me a great outlet to express my emotions and also share my story. I would love to use this activity in my own classroom to learn more about my students.
How can I take this Art Idea and make it my own?
I can give students the option to add other materials to their heart. Materials that show line, express depth, etc. These materials can help fully encompass what the students want to represent in their heart. It also provides more room with differentiation for all different learners.
What cross-curricular connections could I establish?
A great cross-curricular connection could be Health & Physical Education. You can draw on what it looks like to have a healthy heart, and what you can do to have a healthy heart!
What other resources (picture books/technologies/community resources, etc.) would support my students?
Art Floor Plan: Grade 2
How can I take this Art Idea and make it my own?
Instead of a floor plan with my students, we could create a floor plan for the way that students would like to organize their bedroom, or their favorite room in their future house.
What cross-curricular connections could I establish?
I can connect this project to math as we can include measurements of the room and conclude the volume of the items in the room as well as the area and perimeter.
Changes Made:
Does this reflect my passions?
This project does support my passions as I love to organize and imagine realistic plans such as how my classroom will look when I am older.

Today, we were exploring with colours and mixing colours in class. We experimented with colours, tints and shades!
3 features of Sandra Silberzweig's style that I include:
1) Colour
2) Symmetry
3) Space
Planning Sketch:
Lines of personal significance:
1) Mermaid eyebrows: I have always dreamed of being a mermaid and absolutely love the water. My mermaid eyebrows shows my childhood inspiration and something that is still relevant into my adulthood; my love for water.
2) Cactus design crown: Over the last few years I have gained an interest in succulents & cactus's. I grow and propagate my succulents. My succulents are all over myself and have become a main definition of myself.
3) Tree design on neck: Another main defining factor of myself is that I love the outdoors. I love the water, but I also love the trees. Tress are something I immediately notice in nature, they catch my eye and inspire me.
4) Swirls on shirt: I always have a hard time dressing according to occasion, season, etc. I never get it right in which affects my entire day. The swirls on my shirt represent the constant confusion in my dress ware decision.
5) Cheek crosshatching & line design: I love to wear makeup and one of my favorite features is blush. I love flattering pink cheeks.
6) Linear hair flow: My hair has always been extremely thick. These linear lines show the many layers of my hair that make it so overwhelmingly thick.
I began my self-portrait. My portrait is mermaid themed so I have decided to used mermaid inspired colours such as purple, blue, teal, and tints and shades around these colours!

Self-portrait update:
Almost there!
Tints: I explored with tints much throughout my painting. Most noticeably, my purple hair, my pink face, and the blue water!
Analogous colours transitioning subtly from one colour to the next: The analogous colours I used most were blue, purple, and pink.
Complimentary colour set beside each other: The closest complimentary colours set beside each other would be pink/red tint and green in my cactus crown.
How can I take this Art Idea and make it my own?
I would not change a single thing about this project. I absolutely loved creating it while making personal connections throughout. I think that students would love doing this project. An extension opportunity could be writing a poem that encompasses the most accentuated feature of the self-portrait.
My Poem:
There once was a mermaid named Peach
She loved to walk on the beach,
She mostly loved water, rainwater, seawater,
That swimming mermaid named Peach.
I finished my painting and added my permanent marker. I am completely in love with the way this turned out. It exemplifies all of my inspirations and ideas so perfectly.
I posted to Twitter and Sandra Silbersweig retweeted!
Complimentary Colours mixed together: To make the teal colour, I mixed yellow, green and blue! I exemplified this under my sparkles on my eyebrows and also red and purple to make my lip colour.
What cross-curricular connections could I establish?
I could connect this project to language by adding a artists intended meaning section to the activity. This way students could explain what is significant and how it relates to the self-portrait.
Does this reflect my passions?
This activity does reflect my passions as I was able to include everything that inspires me into my painting. I got to express myself in a different way and love the way it turned out. I am very passionate about creating art with meaning and this project did just that.
Which course resources will support me?
My biggest resource will be Sandra Silberzweig. This activity is inspired by her works and providing examples of her work for students will be a great resource to take advantage of.
How can I take this Art Idea and make it my own? What cross-curricular connections could I establish?
I can make this art idea my own by connecting it to drama and expanding on the presentation piece. Students could use props, music, any outside resources. We could focus on similar prompts such as sitting, standing and moving.
Take a look at My Mask photo album to see more photos of my mask details & display.
My mask reminded me of a Drama Teacher. She would stand confidently, she would sit cross-legged on the floor, and she would float/dance through the air as she moves.
Which course resources will support me?
The supplies list we were sent to know how to set up my classroom.
What other resources (picture books/technologies/community resources, etc.) would support my students?
These resources will help students get in touch with how they act and feel so that they can incorporate their feelings into their presentation.
My favourites Order:
How can I take this Art Idea and make it my own?
I loved the idea of drawing something that you do not like because it leaves less room for disappointment. I could extend this by allowing students to bring in an object of their choice.
What cross-curricular connections could I establish?
I can tie this to researching the history of drawing and how it has developed over time!
What other resources (picture books/technologies/community resources, etc.) would support my students?
Other resources that may be beneficial could be iPads (to take different angled pictures to draw). We could also extend this activity by drawing digitally and adding it to our different explorations of drawing.
My current comfort level with making & teaching art:
I still have no concerns about teaching art. This class has truly helped me learn that there is not such thing as bad art.
I am so excited to learn about how to fearlessly self-promote my art program to generate support and funding through parent communication.
I am so incredibly grateful for this opportunity to learn about art and creating! I have learned all about exploration, creation and inspiration. I have learned about art elements, art tools and curriculum connections. I am so excited to take all I have learned into the classroom and develop my own are creators and explorers.
I have even taken my new skills into my personal journey! We recently attended a paint night and instead of following directions, I let my creativity take way and I loved incorporating my new skills into this fun & unique experience.
