The Brunner Mine
The Brunner Mine
The Brunner Mine was a coal mine on the West Coast of New Zealand that operated in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It was an important place for the local community, providing work for miners and their families and helping build New Zealand’s industry.
The mine is also known for the tragic 1896 mining disaster, where 65 miners lost their lives. Today, the site is preserved as a historic place where we can learn about mining, local history, and how people lived and worked long ago.
This term, we are exploring the history of the Brunner Mine. We are finding out what life was like for miners and their families, the tools they used, and how mining shaped our community.
We are asking questions, investigating, and sharing what we discover about this important local place. It’s exciting to learn about our history and how it connects to science and the environment!
