In Kōtuku, we use the SMA (Structured Maths Approach) as part of our daily maths programme to provide a consistent and targeted learning experience for all students. This approach ensures that students build strong number knowledge and problem-solving skills through explicit teaching, hands-on activities, and regular practice. Each day begins with a focused warm-up, followed by strategy-based lessons that are tailored to meet students at their individual levels. The SMA approach allows us to revisit key concepts often, helping students to retain and apply their learning confidently. By using this structured framework, we aim to grow not only mathematical understanding but also students’ confidence and enjoyment in maths.

We use length to measure how long or how short something is. Length tells us the distance from one end of an object to the other end.
We can measure length using informal tools like blocks, pencils, hands, or paper clips, or we can use formal units like centimetres (cm) and metres (m).
