iDeal Structured Literacy In Kōtuku
In Kōtuku, we follow iDEAL Literacy approach to support all learners in developing strong reading, writing, and spelling skills. This approach is evidence-based and designed to build success by teaching the building blocks of language in a clear, sequenced, and cumulative way. Each day includes focused lessons on phonological awareness, decoding (reading), encoding (spelling), vocabulary, sentence structure, and comprehension. Learning is carefully scaffolded, with regular opportunities to practise and revisit concepts to ensure mastery. We use decodable texts that align with the sounds and patterns students are learning, alongside a rich variety of Journals and novels to build fluency, vocabulary, and a love of reading. This balanced mix allows students to apply their skills in meaningful contexts while deepening their understanding of language and text. Our goal is to ensure every student becomes a capable, independent reader and writer by providing a structured, supportive, and inclusive literacy environment.
