Mental Health Access Improvement Act of 2021
This isn't an event which you can go to, but it is still something to celebrate. In March, this year, the Mental Health Access Improvement Act of 2021 was passed. While it happened a few months ago, it directly ties into our theme of Mental Health Awareness! This bill has allowed for different types of workers, many specialized in mental health, to be part of the Medicare program, thus helping people to get assistance for mental injuries as easily as physical ones.
Pronouns!
This is not an event at all, in fact, this is a suggestion/reminder! Now that we're on zoom, we all have our names clearly on our screens. And, if we don't, we can always easily click rename and correct our name. You may have noticed people in your classes who have on their zoom screens, along with their name, a couple words in parentheses. Often, these words are (they/them), (she/her), or (he/him), but there are many other combinations or words preferred by some people. These words are called pronouns, and they show how someone wants to be called when not directly addressed with their names. For example, one might say, "Send the zoom chat to her". These pronouns are helpful, but can also be hurtful if you mix up someone's pronouns with the wrong ones. Because of this, many find it an easy solution to add in their pronouns on their zoom, email, and more. However, when only a few people, especially those who have unique pronouns, write theirs, it may feel awkward for them, or like they are different, and not in a good way. So, next time you're on zoom, you may want to click rename and add in your pronouns.

Trans Spectrum Discussion Group!
The Hudson Valley LGBTQ Community Center has a large array of discussion groups and other events available to the public. Because the COVID-19 virus is still at large, most of those events are virtual. You should be able to access them, but they may not work on chromebooks. Check out this page of the Hudson Valley LGBTQ Community Center to find access to an informative discussion group on the experiences of transgender people which goes on from 7:30 to 8:30 pm on all Wednesdays in May. Remember, while it is important to talk, it is even more important to listen to others' experiences.
