Dates: February 20-22
Basic Land Navigation begins with a general overview of maps. Then it specifically addresses how to read topographic maps. Next it covers various types of geographic location systems, such as latitude/longitude and Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM). This is followed by basic instructions on using a compass and clinometer, a general overview of the Global Positioning System, new skills for navigation and field mapping. This will be a 3 day course.

S-300 Extended Attack Incident Commander

S-300 Initial Attack Incident Commander
This course is designed to meet the training needs of the Incident Commander Type 3 (ICT3). The focus is on the lessons of leadership and command as they relate to the ICT3 position. It is presented in participative lecture format with multiple tactical decision games for students to practice new knowledge. The seven instructional units cover Foundation Skills, Situational Awareness, Command and Control, Managing the Incident, Transitional Activities, Post-Fire Activities and a Final Simulation. This will be a 2 day class.
LAFFA will sponsor current members the $400 tuition making it free to any members in good standing. For those that are not current members of LAFFA, members may join the association before signing up for the class by clicking here to take part in the tuition sponsorship. For members choosing not to join the LAFFA, the cost of the class will be $400 which will be collected prior to the start of class to reserve your seat.
The course will be instructed by Brian Anderson, the United States Fire Services (USFS) Bear Divide Hotshot Superintendent and his cadre.

This is a California State Fire Marshal Course. This will be a 2 day course.

Driver Operator Water Tender 1F
This course provides the knowledge and skills needed to perform preventive maintenance on and operate a water tender. Topics include routine tests, inspections, and servicing functions unique to a water tender; maneuvering and positioning a water tender at a water shuttle fill site; and establishing, maneuvering, and positioning at a water shuttle dumpsite. This is a 3 day course. The first two days are classroom and field exercises which each student must attend. The last day is the drive portion and each student will be scheduled for their drive on either the 30th or 31st.

CA-219 Firing Operations

This course provides information and develops skills required to perform and hold firing operations on wildland fires and prescribed burns. This course contains a mix of online and instructor-led training including live fire exercises. The students will be engaged in wildland firefighting and firing operations. Students are required to complete the online training portion of the course and pre-course quizzes prior to taking the instructor-led training. This course meets and exceeds the objectives of the NWCG S-219 Firing Operations (2014) course.

S-212 Wildland Fire Chainsaws
This is an instructor-led course intended to be presented at the local level. The course lessons provide introduction to the function, maintenance and use of internal combustion engine powered chainsaws, and their tactical wildland fire application. Field exercises support entry level training for firefighters with little or no previous experience in operating a chainsaw, providing hands-on cutting experience in surroundings similar to fireline situations.
