Course Description:
This course provides students with the tools and techniques to make the transition from Single Resource Boss to Incident Commander. The course focuses on Intelligence Gathering and Documentation; Size Up the Incident; Develop a Plan of Action; Post-fire Activities; Evaluating Incident Objectives and Manage the Incident. This will be a 2 day class.
LAFFA will sponsor current members the $400 tuition making it free to any members in good standing. For those that are not current members of LAFFA, members may join the association before signing up for the class by clicking here to take part in the tuition sponsorship. For members choosing not to join the LAFFA, or Students from an Outside agency the cost of the class will be $400 which will be collected the first day of class.
Most LAFD members are already members of LAFFA, which is a nonprofit organization that represents all Los Angeles City Firefighters at the State level with an emphasis on improving training, benefits, and legislative initiatives to improve the fire service. The LAFFA Board has embarked on a new program in funding the professional development of its membership and is proud to sponsor their members to attend this course designed to expand members' knowledge and abilities in the wildland fire environment. Course Description: A Receiving/Distribution Manager (RCDM) is responsible for the logistics of receiving, storing, and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes managing the physical supply area, tracking inventories, providing supplies to personnel, and maintaining safety procedures for storage and handling, especially for hazardous materials. The RCDM also repairs tools, coordinates with other logistics personnel, and ensures the proper shipping, handling, and timely delivery of materials After the 1 day course students will meet the requirements to open their RCDM task book.

Course Description:
Basic Land Navigation begins with a general overview of maps. Then it specifically addresses how to read topographic maps. Next it covers various types of geographic location systems, such as latitude/longitude and Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM). This is followed by basic instructions on using a compass and clinometer, a general overview of the Global Positioning System, new skills for navigation and field mapping. This will be a 3 day course.

Course Description:
This course is designed to provide local and state-level emergency responders with a robust understanding of the duties, responsibilities, and capabilities of an effective SOFR on an All-Hazards Incident Management Team. These responsibilities fall into two categories:
1) Responding to the incident and the safety needs of the incident, and
2) Effectively fulfilling the position responsibilities of a Safety Officer on an All-Hazards IMT.
Exercises, simulations, discussions, and a final exam enable students to process and apply their new knowledge. This will be a 4 day course.

L - 0960 All Hazards Division/Group Supervisor.
The course will provide local- and state- level emergency responders with a robust understanding of the duties, responsibilities, and capabilities of an effective Division/Group Supervisor on an All-Hazards Incident Management Team (AHIMT). The course walks participants through general information, including an overview of the Operations Section and information on incident mobilization, initial situational awareness, and unit management. It also provides detailed instruction on responding to the incident and the command needs of the incident, and emphasizes the importance of risk management and safety considerations.
This course is an instructor-led training that supports learning through discussion, lecture, and active participation in multiple exercises that provides a realistic, scenario-driven approach to mastering the skills required of a Supervisor.

This course provides an overview of Resource Unit Leader (RESL) responsibilities, the Planning Section, and the planning process to contextualize the Resources Unit for participants unfamiliar with the planning process or the Incident Command System. It then explores specific Resources Unit Leader functions and responsibilities including resource tracking systems, operational planning, and resource products/outputs. The Status/Check-in and Demobilization functions are covered to provide participants with the knowledge to perform those duties if necessary.

This course is designed to introduce fire behavior calculations by manual methods, using nomograms and the Fireline Handbook Appendix B: Fire Behavior, PMS 410-2. Students gain an understanding of the determinants of fire behavior though studying inputs (weather, slope, fuels, and fuel moisture). Students also learn how to interpret fire behavior outputs, documentation processes, and fire behavior briefing components.

Course Description:
The course will help participants establish the essential core competencies required for performing the duties of the Facilities Unit Leader (FACL) in an all-hazards incident. The course walks participants through general information, including an overview of the Logistics Section and information on incident mobilization, initial situational awareness, and unit management. It also provides detailed instruction in setting up and maintaining incident facilities, including facilities infrastructure, services, layout, and security.
This course is an instructor-led training that supports learning through discussion, lecture, and active participation in multiple exercises that provides a realistic, scenario-driven approach to mastering the skills required of a FACL. Each unit contains a discussion-based exercise and there is a capstone tabletop exercise at the end of the course to give participants hands-on practice functioning as an FACL.

Course Description:
This course provides the student with the skills necessary to perform as a field observer (FOBS) and/or a fire effects monitor (FEMO). Topics include roles and responsibilities of the FOBS and FEMO; how to make observations and document those observations; how to produce hand drawn and GPS field maps; and how to navigate using a compass and GPS. The navigation unit has 4½ hours of field exercises and the final field exercise is 8 hours.

Course Description:
This course is designed for a Public Information Officer (PIO) assigned to an incident as a member of an All-Hazards Incident Management Team (AHIMT) and local IMTs, as well as for the PIO assigned to an incident as an Assistant PIO in a variety of capacities.
This course will help participants develop a strong set of core PIO skills and the ability to apply them within the context of an AHIMT. This course is also distinct from other information function courses in that it combines elements from both the basic and advanced functions to concentrate training on the fundamental duties and responsibilities of the PIO in an all-hazards environment. The course material does not assume or require experience as a PIO, but also is not a basic PIO course.

Course Description:
This course helps participants establish the essential core competencies required for performing the duties of the Situation Unit Leader (SITL) in an all-hazards incident. This course addresses all responsibilities appropriate to an SITL operating in a local-or state-level All-Hazards Incident Management Team (AHIMT). These responsibilities include processing information and intelligence and developing displays.
This course is an instructor-led training that supports learning through discussion, lecture, and active participation in multiple exercises that provides a realistic, scenario-driven approach to mastering the skills required of an SITL. By requiring participants to bring an SITL Kit to the instruction, the course provides a realistic, hands-on approach to mastering the skills of an SITL.

By requiring participants to bring jurisdiction-specific information to the instruction, the course provides a realistic, hands-on approach to mastering the skills of an SPUL organized by the fundamental steps of the ordering process. Participants identify information required for ordering, as well as complete required forms and documentation related to ordering, and anticipate ordering and supply needs for the incident. In addition to the ordering process, the course discusses mobilization, setting up and managing the Supply Unit, and demobilization.

Course Description:
This five-day course serves as a basic introduction to the activities and processes of a Type 3 All-Hazards Incident Management Team (AHIMT), enabling them to be better prepared to support large scale or complex operations in their communities. This course meets the needs of the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and the National Response Framework (NRF) while focusing on the importance of developing and operating as a functional USFA Type 3 AHIMT and will assist individual responders to perform as viable team members.
Specific Course Topics
Demonstrating the goals of NIMS and the NRF
Emphasizing the nature and purpose of a USFA Type 3 AHIMT so that others in the community and emergency services are more willing and able to assist within various components of their local USFA Type 3 AHIMT
Demonstrating the critical role that leadership and teamwork skills play in the success of an USFA Type 3 AHIMT
Providing a basic framework for building and maintaining critical interpersonal communications and for working together as a team member of an USFA Type 3 AHIMT
Offering practical experience of on-scene operations through extensive exercises and simulations, as well as through post-course refresher training by providing students with the opportunity to perform as members of a USFA Type 3 AHIMT during a mock incident management situation
Target Audience
The target audience of this course is entry level participants who are new to an assignment on an AHIMT. Given its intended audience, participants in this course should include emergency response personnel, such as fire protection and law enforcement personnel, emergency medical services (EMS) responders, Department of Public Works, Department of Public Health, Emergency Management, Mass Care, Non-Governmental agencies, and members of various community and tribal groups offering critical emergency response services.
Although the course is intended to be a basic introduction to AHIMTs, participants should have a foundational understanding of the Incident Command System.
