Community & Culture Committee Mission Statement
The Community and Culture Committee seeks to integrate social-emotional learning and community building into the Lab Middle School community through a social-justice and culturally responsive lens. To do so, the committee offers tools and resources for teachers and staff to cultivate and practice their own SEL skills and also develop strategies to intentionally implement SEL practices in the classroom. These resources are collected and showcased in a variety of settings such as on the committee’s website, during staff meetings and in staff shared workspaces. Since Lab Middle School is a RULER school, the committee plans and disseminates the advisory curriculum for the school community based on the RULER approach, current event topics as well as community input. The committee also supports the planning and organization of school-wide community events, activities and celebrations with collaboration from the larger school community.
Four Pillars:
Connections - Building community and connections within Advisory through discussion and games.
Social Comprehension - Building skills to understand and manage our emotions and how we relate to others.
Life Skills - Establishing habits to help make your life easier. Teachers often call this “executive functioning.”
Community Action - Learning about issues within our various communities, raising awareness-- your own and others’-- and taking action.
