Mental health an essential part of our overall health and quality of life, and when it comes to mental health, small actions equal big impact.  If you are worried about your mental health or are worried about someone you know, there are resources and people out there who are willing to help, no matter what the situation is.  Many of Alliance's policies and benefits include mental health supports.  This page gathers information about many of those supports in one place, and we are actively working to add more supports over time.

Bipoc Mental Health Resources

Anyone can experience the challenges of mental illness regardless of their identity or background. However, your concerns or experiences and how you understand and cope with these conditions may be different based on your cultural perspective and lived experiences.  Sometimes it's helpful to connect with providers and supports offered from a perspective similar to your own.  Here are a few supports for members of BIPOC communities.

Black Mental Health Alliance Connects Black individuals with culturally competent mental health professionals, as well as provides information and resources through its “Find a Therapist” locator.

Black Mental Wellness From a Black perspective, this organization provides access to evidence-based information and resources about mental health as well as training opportunities for students and professionals.

The American Society of Hispanic Psychiatry works to foster multidisciplinary collaborations in mental health treatment, specifically focusing on Latino populations.  Visitors can utilize its “Find a Physician” feature on the website should they desire to have a LatinX provider.

Therapy for LatinX serves as a database of therapists who either identify as LatinX or have worked closely with LatinX communities and understands their needs. The website is also available in Spanish.

NAMI’s Compartiendo Esperanza This bilingual 90-minute presentation is provided by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). It aims to increase mental health awareness in Latino communities by addressing key topics such as signs and symptoms of mental health disorders like anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and depression. They provide guidance on how to talk about mental health and decrease stigma; how to define and achieve recovery; and available resources.

The Asian Mental Health Collective is an organization focused on de-stigmatizing mental health within AAPI communities. It provides the APISAA Therapist Directory, a directory of therapists located in most states and Washington, DC who specialize in serving Asian American, South Asian American, and Pacific Islander communities.

The National Asian American Pacific Islander Mental Health Association (NAAPIMHA) is a resource provider for mental health services for Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Native Hawaiians. The organization provides a resource list of state-level programs designed to meet AAPI-community mental health needs.

Time Off

We are frequently asked if accrued sick time may be used for mental health purposes.  Our response: Mental health is health.  We provide paid sick leave for our staff to use to:

  • recover from injury or illness, including mental injury or illness,

  • seek medical diagnosis, treatment, or preventative care, including care provided by behavioral/mental healthcare providers,

  • care for a family member who is suffering from injury or illness, including mental health conditions.

Accordingly, if you are recovering from mental injury or illness and require time off, you are encouraged to use your sick leave.  We trust our employees to be honest in their use of sick leave and to bring their best in service to our scholars.

If your need for leave becomes an extended need of over 5 business days or exceeds your sick leave balance, please contact Human Resources to discuss leave of absence options and protections.
