KUSD band programs are readily known for its tradition of musical excellence locally and across Arizona in individual & large group competitions. From elementary to high school, students are provided opportunities to create music, relate it to cross-curricular content and evaluate musical performances outlined in the state music standards. Many children find success and increased self-esteem by participating in a music program. Musical experiences enhance a child’s academic achievement, problem-solving skills and teamwork leading to lifelong success.
Starting in Fifth Grade, students may join their school's band program. Band students receive instruction on proper playing techniques and heighte their understanding of the musical language through a variety of musical styles and mediums. Students perform in school concerts and compete at state events. Visit the KUSD Performing Arts Calendar for upcoming concerts!
Elementary Bands
KUSD Fifth Grade students are invited to join band each July. Students may select a woodwind (flute, clarinet, saxophone), brass (trumpet, trombone) or percussion (bells & drums) instrument. A certified band specialist will provide instruction on instrument assembly & care, proper playing techniques and the foundations of reading music (pitch & rhythm). Visit the KUSD Elementary Band website for further information.
Middle School & High School Bands
Students are encouraged to sign up for yearlong band electives at the secondary level. Middle school bands promote the next steps from beginning to intermediate musical skills. Instrumentalists flourish to advanced levels of music performance in high school. Opportunities for new musicians are available at all levels. Please contact the school's band director for pre-requisites.
Instrument Usage & Supplies
Families may opt to rent or provide their own musical instrument for band participation. School-provided instruments at all levels are available on a limited basis for a one-time $25/annual use fee. Minimal playing & cleaning supplies will be at the family's expense.
