Kumuola is a learning laboratory within Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi, Hālau Kupukupu, located in Honohononui, Hilo, Hawaiʻi. Rooted in the stewardship of three traditional Hawaiian fishponds — Waiāhole, Kapalaho, and Waiʻōpio— Kumuola serves as both a foundation and inspiration for innovative, grounded, and joyful learning. As part of Hālau Kupukupu, the research and development division of our school, we create a safe space where haumāna and field experts come together to advance the restoration and understanding of loko iʻa, strengthening both educational outcomes and cultural resilience.
