Sustainable Development of Tourism

In light of the Maui wildfires, Hulihia has pivoted its focus to examine the long-term revitalization of Lahaina. Due to this change, the Sustainable Development of Tourism project is no longer active. We recognize the need to create a tourism industry that is supportive of our communities rather than extractive. We hope to continue this valuable mission as we move forward with long-term revitalization plans for Lahaina.

Project Overview

Hulihia is conducting a comprehensive systems-based analysis around sustainable development in the tourism industry across Maui Nui. Throughout this project, Hulihia is conducting extensive community engagement to understand Maui Nui’s resident and visitor needs and the impacts of the tourism economy across the islands. Through applied sustainability and systems expertise, integrating indigenous knowledge and academic research, Hulihia will construct a systems model (visual diagram) of the tourism industry and identify mechanisms for promoting sustainable economic growth and community wellbeing.  Solutions that support sustainability principles and goals, align with community needs, and enhance resource management will be developed alongside subject matter experts and community leaders.

As a sustainability systems-driven center, Hulihia works to move Maui toward a more sustainable future and build momentum toward achieving Hawaiʻi’s sustainability goals. By addressing tourism’s impact through a systems-based approach, Hulihia is supporting the long-term viability and resilience of the local community. Maui Nui has the opportunity to set an example as a leader in sustainable tourism that supports a robust economy, protects our natural resources, and enriches the quality of life for all.

Group Systems Modeling

We are excited to engage the community in group systems modeling. During our community talk story sessions, we ask that the group share thoughts and experiences to build a model exploring an issue within the visitor industry.

Below is a model developed at our first talk session.
