Project Overview

The Wailea Community Association aims to gain a deeper understanding of the transportation and housing needs of the workforce within the Wailea, Maui area through the initiation of a community survey. To ensure impartiality and transparency in the survey process, the association has partnered with The Hulihia Center for Sustainable Systems (Hulihia). Hulihia is developing a concise yet comprehensive survey to capture essential insights from the workforce regarding their commuting habits and housing circumstances.

Many Wailea employees live outside of the area and commute to work in single-occupancy vehicles. This contributes to traffic congestion, parking challenges, and adverse environmental effects associated with increased vehicle usage. Moreover, this commuting pattern imposes financial burdens on employees, encompassing expenses related to fuel, vehicle maintenance, and associated costs. This burden may be mitigated by better understanding these patterns, driving forces, and employee preferences.

The primary objective of this project is to gather valuable data that offers a clear representation of the transportation and housing needs of Wailea area employees. By doing so, the survey results will provide crucial insights for the local community and decision-makers, informing future development and planning initiatives in the area. Ultimately, this project aims to advocate for improved programs that meet the needs of the Wailea workforce.
