Nature’s Pathways is a hands-on science course for middle school students, to explore the story of Earth and the natural world. Students will travel through geologic time, investigate dinosaurs and ancient life, examine rocks, fossils, and natural specimens, and use microscopes to discover details hidden from the naked eye. Through labs, projects, outdoor exploration, and hands-on investigations, students will uncover how Earth has changed over time and how the living and nonliving parts of nature are connected. Nature’s Pathways encourages curiosity, observation, and discovery as students follow the clues nature has left behind.

Nature’s Pathways is an Earth & Space Science course with its primary emphasis on Earth’s natural history. Astronomy appears briefly at the beginning of the semester through the Big Bang and formation of Earth before the course moves into geology, paleontology, evolution, and modern nature.
Nature’s Pathways is a hands-on journey through Earth’s incredible story. Students investigate rocks, minerals, fossils, geologic time, prehistoric life, dinosaurs, evolution, and the natural world around them. Through labs, microscopes, documentaries, outdoor exploration, scientific challenges, and creative projects, students learn to follow the evidence nature has left behind.
Nature’s Pathways is built around a simple idea: Nature leaves clues. Scientists follow them.
A fossil can tell us about an organism that disappeared millions of years ago.
A rock can preserve evidence of an ancient environment.
A dinosaur tooth can provide clues about diet.
A whale skeleton can reveal evidence of ancestors that once lived on land.
A leaf can contain structures invisible to the naked eye.
Even the ground beneath our feet contains pieces of Earth’s story.
Throughout this course, students will learn how to observe, question, investigate, compare, analyze evidence, and communicate discoveries.
🧭THE NATURE'S PATHWAYS
LEARNING JOURNEY
The semester is organized into two quarters, but both quarters tell one continuous story. Students begin by learning how scientists follow clues in nature. From there, we travel backward through Earth’s history and then forward again—investigating the changing planet, fossils, prehistoric worlds, dinosaurs, extinction, evolution, and the connections between ancient and modern life.
"How can we use the clues found in nature to uncover Earth's story; and share that story with others?"
OUR STORY AT A GLANCE
Nature contains clues.
↓
Rocks and fossils preserve Earth’s past.
↓
Prehistoric worlds reveal how dramatically life has changed.
↓
Evolution connects ancient life with organisms alive today.
↓
Scientists communicate what they discover.
What is Astronomy?
Stars, Comets, and Asteroids, OH MY! Get your telescopes ready because in this class we will be blasting off into space and taking a look at the processes of stars, the universe, and life beyond Earth.
What is Geology?
Geology is the Study of Earth's materials, structures, and processes. In this class, we will be taking a look at how our planet works, in both the present and in past history. We will be studying different materials on Earth, including soil, water, rock formation, volcanoes, earthquakes, and plate tectonics. We will also be making waves as we dive deep to take a look at the ocean floor, also called marine geology or geological oceanography.
What is Paleontology?
Have you ever questioned what creatures walked this earth well before humans? Do you love dinosaurs? Do you want to learn about dinosaurs and prehistoric times? - Or do you feel it's all bologna? In this course, we will be studying the evolution of our planet and the creatures that roamed our earth, much before humans. Let’s discuss, debate, learn, and create!
