STEM-VIVOR
"How can I adapt and succeed in challenging environments?"
STEM-Vivor is a project-based survival adventure that combines science, mathematics, engineering, creativity, and real-world problem solving. Students begin as wilderness explorers, learn to respond when nature fights back, establish a homebase, and ultimately design a community that can survive the future.
Science and mathematics meet during separate class periods but remain connected under one course identity. Students regularly use mathematics in scientific investigations and science contexts in mathematical problem solving.

What Are We Learning?
We will be working together to survive in many different types of environments and climates.
Starting with Nature's Classroom, and continuing with basic survival skills, including shelter, making safe drinking water, fire starting, overcoming diseases, medical tips, turning nature into medicine, and finding food sources, we will learn how to make the ultimate survival guide!
All LAB SAFETY CONTRACTS need to be signed and returned asap. This is a summative assignment grade, and you can not participate in labs until this contract is signed and returned.
The STEM-Vivor Learning Journey
The year is organized into two semesters and four quarters. Each quarter represents a new stage of the same survival story, and students carry knowledge, designs, evidence, and lessons forward.
How can I adapt and succeed in challenging environments?
We enter the wilderness and learn what humans need to survive. Survival skills help us meet our basic needs. Nature challenges our plans and forces us to adapt. Resilience allows us to recover, rebuild, and find a place to call home. Communities grow when people work together to manage food, water, shelter, and resources. Sustainable systems help those communities endure change. STEM helps us move from simply surviving to building a future that can thrive.
SEMESTER ONE — SURVIVE
Q1 Wilderness Warriors → Q2 Nature’s Fury
Explore an unknown environment
Map, navigate, research, and plan
Meet needs for water, fire, food, shelter, and safety
Respond to weather, disasters, injuries, and changing conditions
Redesign plans when systems fail or resources change
SEMESTER TWO — THRIVE
Q3 Roots & Resilience → Q4 Built to Last
Choose a homebase and establish a permanent settlement
Grow crops, raise chickens, manage soil, water, food, and shelter
Design community systems and use resources responsibly
Respond to population growth, scarcity, waste, drought, and new challenges
Use the entire year of STEM learning to build a sustainable future
Semester 1 Quarter 1: Wilderness Warriors — I can survive.
Semester 1 Quarter 2: Nature’s Fury — I can adapt.
Semester 2 Quarter 3: Roots & Resilience — I can build.
Semester 2 Quarter 4: Built to Last — I can sustain.
Yearlong Driving Questions
What do humans need to survive, and how can STEM help us meet those needs?
How can learning survival skills teach us how humans adapt to their surroundings?
How do survival situations test creativity, resourcefulness, critical thinking, and problem-solving?
How can understanding nature help us predict danger and make safer decisions?
How can a small change in one part of a system create a much larger effect?
What makes a community resilient, sustainable, and built to last?

Are you ready to brave the wild?
Students begin their STEM-Vivor journey as wilderness explorers learning what it truly takes to survive. They’ll map unfamiliar terrain, investigate plants and animals, purify water, explore fire science and safety, design shelters, forage responsibly, fish, and create tools using limited resources. Along the way, they’ll use science, math, engineering, teamwork, and problem-solving to build their first complete survival system.
This is where the adventure begins.
Survive the storm—or be swept away.
Just when students think they have survival figured out, nature changes the rules. Extreme weather, natural disasters, injuries, dangerous plants and animals, and unexpected environmental hazards will put their original survival plans to the test. Students will investigate weather patterns, emergency preparedness, first aid, risk, and cause-and-effect while redesigning their systems to become stronger and more resilient.
Survival isn’t about having the perfect plan—it’s about knowing how to adapt when the plan fails.
From survivor to settler—can you build a new beginning?
Surviving day to day is no longer enough. Students will choose a permanent homebase and begin building a mini-civilization designed to last. They’ll investigate soil, grow crops, design farms and irrigation systems, raise chickens, create permanent shelters, and determine how their community will manage food, water, land, and other resources.
Resilience means more than surviving—it means putting down roots, rebuilding, and creating something that can grow.
You built a community—but can it survive the future?
The final STEM-Vivor challenge asks students to take everything they have learned and prepare their growing community for what comes next. Population growth, limited resources, food and water demands, waste, energy, infrastructure, environmental change, and unexpected challenges will test the systems they created. Students will use data, mathematics, science, engineering, and collaboration to redesign their community and make difficult decisions about its future.
The goal is no longer simply to survive. It’s to build a community resilient enough to adapt, grow, and thrive.
