Year 6

Autumn Newsletter

Welcome We have really enjoyed meeting and getting to know your children over the last few days! They have started to settle in well at KPJS.

Maths

This term, pupils will learn about place value, the four operations, Fractions, Decimals and Percentages, Money, Word Problems, Units of Measure. Mental arithmetic skills will be developed through daily fluency each morning. We encourage parents to practice maths skills at home with their children such as: times tables, telling the time, counting money and working out change when at the shops. In addition, pupils should be using My Maths and Timetable Rockstars as advised by the teachers.

Literacy

The children will be reading and working with a variety of texts including “Eye of the Wolf” by Daniel Pennac, "Coming to England" by Floella Benjamin as well as poetry, folk tales and non -fiction texts. Pupils will read aloud, develop comprehension skills, form opinions and discuss their views. Spelling, punctuation and grammar will be taught weekly within each unit of work. In addition to these lessons, the children will have writing sessions where they will develop their writing skills and build up to writing an extended piece of writing relating to the work they have covered in their English or Topic lessons during the week.

Reading

Spellings

Spellings will be tested weekly in class with children having the opportunity to practice the vocabulary that they struggled with between lessons.

Reading Record

Year 6 children will have a digital internal reading record that is updated by the classroom teachers. Once the children have finished a book they will answer a 5 question test on the book they have chosen to assess comprehension. If the children are unable to answer all 5 questions then they are given the opportunity to search for the answers in the book and try again.

Homework

To help them prepare for High School, homework will be set on Google Classroom everyday (Monday to Friday). Your child will have 4 tasks to complete each night (Arithmetic, Reasoning, SPAG and Vocabulary). They should complete these tasks in the pink homework book . The answers will be posted in Google Classroom the following day for self-assessment. Your children should alert their class teacher to any section that they struggled with to receive additional support. The class teacher will periodically ask for the homework books to be brought in for a homework audit and children who have not been completing the homework will do so in their breaktimes. They also need to read daily and use BUG CLUB at least 3 times a week, which will help improve their comprehension skills.

Children are free to use their classrooms from 8.30am to do their homework if they are struggling with internet at home or simply want a quiet environment.

Foundation Subjects:

This term our foundation subject topics include:

SATS

Throughout the year, we will be preparing the children for the SATs exams which will take place during the week beginning 13th May 2024. These exams will assess the children's understanding of Maths, spelling, punctuation and grammar as well as their comprehension of texts. The children's writing will be teacher assessed.

They will have access to a number of online platforms to aid their preparation - which will be provided by the school as the year progresses.

Please ensure they use these on a regular basis. If you wish to purchase revision material, then all major book sellers carry a variety of study aids for End of Key Stage 2 Assessments.
