Check out these past events as examples of the awesome events you can attend!
For current upcoming events, please check the sustainability newsletter! The newsletter is sent via email to all Knox Students and Faculty/Staff each Monday afternoon during the academic year.
Each season, we give many pounds of Knox farm produce away to volunteers and community members!
Each year, Urban Agriculture students learn about how to collect and save seeds for future planting. They also meet with Mr. Davis, who is a local gardener with over 50 years of experience. He shares stories and techniques with the students, and also swaps seeds with the Farm! Some of our crops, including our Kentucky Pole Beans, are descended from plants he's tended to for generations.
Compost Crew and the Knox Farm hold continual compost workshops and trainings throughout the year. If you're interested in joining the communty-scale compost system, or starting your own system at home, keep an eye out for upcoming events! Or reach out and someone from Compost Crew or the Office of Sustainability would be happy to meet with you!
Each October, Seymour Library collaborates with the Knox Farm to hold a pumpkin carving event! Finished jack-o-lanterns have the opportunity to compete for fun prizes,
Each year after Halloween, the Knox Farm, Compost Crew, and Sigma Nu fraternity collaborate to throw a Pumpkin Smash Bash. At this fun event, community members smash old jack-o-lanterns into smaller pieces that are easier to compost. This prevents the pumpkins from going to the landfill and contributes to nutrient-rich compost that nourishes soil at the Knox Farm.
During the summers of 2024 and 2025, Knox hosted an herbalism class, a young gardeners class, and an exploring sustainability class for Galesburg youth as part of the College for Kids Program! This was a fun way to share knowledge with the community and inspire youth to get outside and enjoy nature! These classes may return in future years, depending on community interest and staff availability.
Each year, during Homecoming and Family/Friends weekend, we offer farm tours and workshops led by current students. Bring your friends and family to learn about the awesome stuff we do at the farm and connect with Knox community!
During each Earth Month, we celebrate Arbor Day by inviting community members to help us plant new guilds in our perennial forest garden, and maintain our existing guilds!
Guilds are groups of plants that are strategically planted together to mimic natural ecosystems. These plants work together to enhance system productivity! For example, the low-laying comfrey in our guilds provides a nourishing and protective ground cover for the tall apple trees, while other mid-height plants provide a diversity of food and medicine for people and animals.
