The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) defines community composting as "a model of composting that sources organic materials locally, engages the community in the composting process, and uses the compost produced in local soils."
This model has local environmental, social, and economic benefits! We keep resources local, grow delicious food, reduce pollution, and create local jobs and learning opportunities.
This community-scale compost system is different than our industrial system found in the caf and in 3-way systems across campus. Because it's small-scale, it can't break down compostable packaging, meat, dairy, or greasy foods. Check the graphic below to understand what materials can go in each system!
