Recorder Information for 4th & 5th grade

Dear McDougle Parents,

Yay! Once again, our 4th & 5th grade students will be playing recorders!

  • The McDougle recorder program is for our 4th and 5th grade students.
  • The recorder that your child purchases in 4th grade can be used through 5th grade.
  • These instruments are easy to transport.
  • They are, also, a great way for your student to show off for friends and family members.

What is a Recorder?

  • The recorder is a member of the woodwind family.
  • The recorder was the precursor to the modern-day flute.

5th grade:

  • 5th grade will resume playing recorder beginning the 3rd week of school.
  • 5th grade performs “Jingle Bells” – on the recorder – every year at our annual Holiday Sing-a-long, Thursday, December 20th, 2018, 8:45 AM, in the Gym.
  • They will continue to play their recorder throughout the school year.

4th grade:

  • 4th grade has a heavy performance schedule during 1st semester...So, due to their musical on November 29th, 2018, 7:00 PM & the Holiday Sing-a-long on December 20th, 2018, 8:45 AM, our 4th grade students will begin playing recorder in late February 2019.

Purchasing a Recorder:

Your 4th & 5th grade student(s) MUST have a Recorder this year.

Price: The recorders are $9.00. This is sold as a bundle with a digital copy to the book.

School Store: Your child may purchase their recorder at our school store. The School Store is open early on Wednesday and Friday mornings. The School Store sells all color recorders.

No Dollar Stores: Please do not purchase a recorder at a dollar store. They break very quickly.

The recorders sold in the School Store come from Macie Publishing. They have a variety of colors. You may, also, purchase your child’s recorder at a music store or online at http://www.maciepublishing.com/

Remember:

  • The recorder that your child purchases in 4th grade can be used through 5th grade.
  • So, future 5th graders: As we discussed in class, “Keep up with that thing over the summer.” 😊

Why the recorder?

  • The recorder program at McDougle will be teaching your child how to read and play music.
  • Your child will be practicing both in class and at home.
  • Learning how to play the recorder gives your child “a glimpse” into I.S. Band.
  • Many of the techniques & fingerings used to play recorder directly transfer to several instruments in the Woodwind Family.

How to Care for Your Recorder:

  • The recorders are very delicate. Please help your child take care of their recorder.
  • Please don't leave the recorder lying out around the house - It could break...Someone could trip over it...You get the idea.
  • Do NOT leave the recorder in a hot car - It will warp/melt.
  • You or your child can clean your child’s recorder in your dishwasher. Remember to keep it away from the heating element.
  • You or your child can, also, clean your child's recorder with warm, soapy water.

Looking forward to ALL the GREAT MUSIC your student will be

LEARNING, PLAYING & PERFORMING this year!

Thank you!

Mrs. Cathy Dudley and Mr. Oscar Cardoza
