Riga, the vibrant capital of Latvia, is easily accessible from many parts of Europe and beyond. Whether you’re arriving by air, land, or sea, getting here is simple and convenient.
By Air
Riga International Airport (RIX) is the largest air hub in the Baltic region, located just 10 km from the city centre. Direct flights connect Riga to over 100 destinations across Europe, Scandinavia, and the Middle East. Airlines: Air Baltic, Ryanair, Lufthansa, Finnair, and other major carriers operate regular routes.
Getting to the city:
Airport bus #22 runs to the city centre in about 30 minutes. For this route, tickets can also be purchased from the driver. Payment is accepted only by bank card, and the ticket price is €1.81. Other pre-purchased ticket types and travel discounts are also valid on bus route No. 22.
Taxi and ride-hailing apps (Bolt) are readily available. Car sharing is available with the corresponding apps (CarGuru, CityBee, Bolt). Private transfers and car rentals can also be arranged at the airport.
By Bus
Several international bus companies (such as Ecolines, Lux Express, and FlixBus) offer daily services to and from major cities in the Baltics and Europe. Buses are affordable, comfortable, and often include Wi-Fi and power outlets. The Riga International Bus Station is centrally located near the railway station and the Old Town.
By Car
Driving to Riga is straightforward, with well-maintained highways connecting it to neighbouring countries. Distances: Tallinn – 310 km (4.5 hours), Vilnius – 295 km (4 hours), Warsaw – 660 km (8–9 hours). Parking is available in and around the city centre, though spaces in the Old Town can be limited.
🚶♀️ Getting Around Riga
Riga is a compact, walkable city where most of the main sights, restaurants, and hotels are within easy reach. Whether you prefer to explore on foot, by bike, or using public transport, moving around is simple and convenient.
On Foot
Riga’s Old Town (Vecriga) and city centre are best explored on foot. The cobbled streets, art nouveau architecture, and river views make walking both enjoyable and efficient. Most major attractions, cafes, and shops are located within a 2–3 km radius.
Public Transport
Riga has a reliable and affordable public transport system operated by Rīgas Satiksme, including trams, buses, and trolleybuses. Tickets can be purchased from ticket machines, kiosks, or via the Mobilly or Rigas Satiksme mobile apps. A single ride costs around €1.50, and day passes (24-hour, 3-day, or 5-day) offer great value for visitors.
By Bike or E-Scooter
Cycling and e-scootering are popular and eco-friendly ways to get around. Bike rental services and e-scooter apps like Bolt and nextbike are widely available. Dedicated bike paths connect the centre with parks, neighbourhoods, and the riverfront.
By Taxi or Ride-Hailing
Taxis are easy to find, but ride-hailing apps are often cheaper and more reliable. Bolt is the most common app used in Riga. Always check the price estimate before starting your trip.
By Car
While driving is straightforward, parking in the city centre—especially in the Old Town—can be limited and subject to fees. If you’re staying centrally, it’s often easier to walk or use public transport. Car-sharing services are also available for short trips (see above).
